Kano Film Dealers decry low patronage on sales of DVD

Dealers in Hausa films in Kano, on Wednesday said that there was low patronage in the sale of DVD’s as viewers now prefer cinemas and viewing centres.

Some of the traders, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), appealed for intervention before their business collapse.

Auwal Bature, a dealer at the famous Wambai films market, said that most movie lovers in Kano have resorted to cinemas and viewing centres to watch latest movies and no longer purchase DVD’s.

According to him, although people from other countries come to buy the films, the business was no longer booming locally.

Similarly, Surajo Muktar said that most dealers have opted for other businesses such as sale of religious films.

“Hausa movies are now released many months after such movies have shown in cinemas so, when they hit the market, people are no longer keen,” he explained.

He said that there was the need for film producers to partner the traders in the area of distribution so that their business would not suffer setback.

Meanwhile, Falalu Dorayi, popular distributor and film producer, described the cinemas as the first market outlet for Hausa films.

He disclosed that some producers travel to many African countries such as Cameroun, Niger and Tchad to premiere their films in the cinemas.

Mr. Dorayi said that there was the need for marketers to adopt new strategies and move with the new trend if they wanted their business to improve.

According to Mr. Dorayi, “the cinemas provide an avenue for a producer to get his money at once unlike the local markets that the money comes in bits.’’

He however, appealed to wealthy individuals to invest in the entertainment industry by providing cinemas and viewing centres across the state.

N3.1b fraud: Suswan pressured witness to change statement – EFCC alleges

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Wednesday, attempted to enter into evidence a statement alleging that a witness

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Wednesday, attempted to enter into evidence a statement alleging that a witness in the ongoing trial of former Benue governor, Gabriel Suswam, was pressured into changing his statement.

Suswam and his former Commissioner for Finance, Omadachi Oklobia are standing trial on a 9-count charge bordering on money laundering to the tune of N3.1 billion.

At the resumed trial today, Mr Rotimi Jacobs, (SAN) the lead the EFCC prosecuting counsel told the Federal High Court in Abuja, that the fourth prosecution witness, Mr Abubakar Umar said he was pressured by Suswam’s team.

Jacobs read part of the statement where the witness said that he was under a lot of pressure from the people around Suswam to change his statement and was told he would be offered money if he did.

However, when the prosecutor sought to tender the document as evidence, Suswam’s counsel, Mr Joseph Daudu (SAN) objected to the admissibility of the document.

Daudu said the original statement, which was made in Hausa language before it was translated into English, ought to be tendered before the court.

He said it was only from the original statement made in Hausa that the true testimony of the witness could be deciphered.

Jacobs, however, argued that the grounds given by the defence for the inadmissibility of the document was not tenable.

Jacobs said, “The claim that the documents we seek to tender was made in Hausa and what we seek to tender is the English version, is not true.

“The statement was written in English language and not in Hausa as alleged by the defence counsel.”

He said once a witness signed a statement he was said to be the maker of such statement.

Consequently, the judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed adjourned the matter until March 14 to rule on the admissibility of the statement and continuation of trial.

Collins who was said to have had a lavish wedding last November had gone underground with the pretext that he traveled to Malaysia for greener pastures.

According to a Facebook post, “E-Money” returned in December, 2017 with  loads of cash making a lot of people green with envy over his new found wealth.

Andrew Enwerem, the Imo State Police public relations officer confirmed that “E-Money” was killed  along with two others. Three other members of his gang were arrested.

“E-Money” was allegedly so rich that he bought and gave out cars to people during the last Yuletide.

Also, another member of the kidnap syndicate, Chinwendu Sylvester, 24, from Olori Amaraku in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, who allegedly operated as the driver, said that he took to kidnapping after Governor Rochas Okorocha demolished his business at Ekeonunwa Market, Owerri.

Chinwendu said that his clothing shop was demolished and he approached a friend who introduced him to the syndicate, where he operated as the driver.

According to him, he has spent three years at the Owerri Prisons for robbery related offences.

A police source told newsmen that the gang leader accumulated millions via the crime, saying that “it is unfortunate that we could not capture him alive. He was a multi-millionaire, he bought cars and gave out some to communities where he received chieftaincy tittles.”

One of Big Brother Naija 3 housemates, Dee-one has apologised to fellow housemate, Ahneeka for rejecting her proposal during a pairing game on Wednesday.

The housemates on Wednesday entered a pairing game in the house in which the female housemates were asked to pick numbers after which they were told to choose a male partner each.

The male housemates in return had the choice to either accept or reject the ladies as they approached.

Acceptance meant that the female housemate would receive a flower from the male housemate.

However, there was slight drama as Ahneeka was turned down by Dee one as he refused to give her the flower.

This generated an uproar in the house after the game as Ahneeka felt embarrassed sitting alone on her bed.

Dee one, on the other hand felt bad about the situation and apologised to Ahneeka.

He said he didn’t reject her intentionally as he had no idea it was the permanent pairing section but thought it was just a game.

“I am sorry I feel bad, I just thought the flower thing was like a game.

“What can I do to help you feel better, I thought it was a game that was going to end had no idea it was permanent. I felt the pairing game was not normal as the guys were holding roses,” Dee one said

By James Agberebi: Hosts Morocco have qualified for the final of this year’s Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) after edging Libya 3-1 after extra-time in the semi-final on Wednesday in Casablanca.

This is Morocco’s first ever final appearance in CHAN since they made their debut in 2014 in South Africa where they lost 4-3 to Nigeria in the quarter-finals.

They become the first host nation to make it to the final since the tournament began in Côte d’Ivoire in 2009.

Tournament top scorer, Ayoub El Kaabi, gave Morocco the lead in the 73rd minute after heading in a cross from the left.

Libya equalised in the 86th minute through Abdulrahman Khalleefah who struck into an empty net following an error by the Moroccan keeper whose attempt to dribble a Libyan player in the box went horribly wrong.

El Kaabi scored his second goal to make it 2-1 in the seventh minute of extra-time as he slot the ball into an empty net from a deflected corner after he was left unmarked.

And with three minutes left in second half extra-time, Walid El Karti made the game safe for Morocco as he converted from the penalty spot to end the game 3-1.

El Kaabi has now taken his goals tally at this year’s edition to eight.

Morocco will now face the winners of the second semi-final between Nigeria and Sudan in Sunday’s final.
