Romelu Lukaku became the first Belgian to reach 100 EPL goals as Manchester United quickly regained second place in the table from Liverpool with a comfortable 2-0 win over Swansea City on Saturday.

The powerful striker put his team in front within five minutes from a pass by Alexis Sanchez, who added the second quarter of an hour later.

Jose Mourinho’s side, with record signing Paul Pogba back in the side, were dominant, although David de Gea did have to make two saves from Tammy Abraham.

Swansea, revitalised under Jose Mourinho’s friend and compatriot Carlos Carvalhal, remain three points above the relegation zone but drop down a place to 15th.

Swansea improved after the break, with Tammy Abraham twice denied by David de Gea, but United were always in control.

The Ballot Paper

Over One million voters in Egypt on Friday attempted to elect Liverpool hero Mo Salah as the President of the Country.

Salah, who once again proved to be the Reds’ match winner with a crucial late goal at Crystal Palace Saturday, was the surprise name on a number of ballot papers in the Egyptian presidential election.

The over one million fans of the ace footballer in his home country and voters didn’t fancy any of the political candidates on their ballot papers.

According to state newspaper – the Economist, some of the voters crossed out the names of Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi and his opponent, Al-Ahram, on their ballot papers and wrote in Salah’s name instead.

According to reports only 25m people voted in the election, a drop of more than half compared to the last national vote in 2014.

In total more than 1m Egyptians spoiled their ballots, nearly twice the number who chose the challenging candidate Moussa Mustafa Moussa – this included those who attempted to elect the Reds’ forward.

Salah has had a stunning first season for Liverpool – with Saturday’s winner at Selhurst Park his 37th goal.

He is also the current holder of the African Footballer of the Year award.

The Egyptian has already achieved cult hero status in Liverpool, with an entire shop in Country Road currently dedicated to him.

Thunder Snow Upsets West Coast To Win Dubai World Cup

Thunder Snow stormed to a shock victory in Saturday’s Dubai World Cup to give Godolphin its seventh win in the race, after holding off favourite West Coast.

Under Belgian jockey Christophe Soumillon, four-year-old colt Thunder Snow led from the front ahead of West Coast and cruised to victory by five-and-three-quarter lengths to win at odds of 8-1.

It gave trainer Saeed bin Suroor an incredible eighth Dubai World Cup win and first since Prince Bishop in 2015.

It was a third near-miss in big races for the Bob Baffert-trained West Coast, after finishing second in the Pegasus World Cup and third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

But Thunder Snow earned redemption after refusing to run at last year’s Kentucky Derby by winning the $10 million race.

Mubtaahij completed the places in third at 28-1, behind stablemate West Coast.

North America had been seen as the likeliest challenger to West Coast but missed the break to effectively end his chances.

The mile-and-a-quarter contest quickly became a straight fight between the leading duo, and although West Coast looked well-placed on the outside of Thunder Snow coming into the home straight, the three-year-old colt was left trailing and only just hung on for the second.

The Dubai World Cup retains plenty of its prestige, despite being usurped as the world’s most lucrative race two years ago by the Pegasus World Cup.

But it remains the richest day in international racing, worth $30 million, and Godolphin completed a stunning clean sweep of the three closing races.

After 4-1 favourite Benbatl powered clear to win the $6 million Dubai Turf, William Buick guided Hawkbill to a front-running victory in the Dubai Sheema Classic, also worth $6 million.

Man City Ease Past Everton, Close On On EPL Title

Manchester City moved a step closer to winning their fifth English Premier League title following a comfortable 3-1 win against

Manchester City moved a step closer to winning their fifth English Premier League title following a comfortable 3-1 win against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Citizens, who are now on 84 points from 31 games  can now claim the title if they beat rivals Manchester United, who are 16 points behind in second place, at the Etihad Stadium next weekend.

Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling were all target for City, while Yannick Bolasie scored the hosts’ consolation goal.

Pep Guardiola’s men started brightly and were ahead in the fourth minute with Sane thumping home a left-footed volley from 12 yards after a lovely play from David Silva in the build-up.

It is the German winger’s 13th goal of the season.

Gabriel Jesus got his side’s second goal of the game in the 12th minute after he was set up by Kevin De Bruyne.

City’s third goal of the game arrived before half time, and it came through a third different goalscorer as  Sterling buried his 21st of the season with a tidy finish under pressure from Leighton Baines.

The hosts reduced the deficit in the 63rd minute through Bolasie who fired his first goal since October 2016 past Ederson.

Match of the Day returns!

After the international break, and a helter skelter Saturday in the Premier League, it is great to welcome back Match of the Day.

With no Gary Lineker presenting Match of the Day it has been left to Dan Walker to reveal the running order.

Manchester City are on first thanks to their excellent win at Everton on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side had the game wrapped up thanks to goals from Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling before half-time.

Liverpool are second on Match of the Day

Liverpool were arguably involved in the Premier League game of the day as they won 2-1 at Crystal Palace.

The scoreline does not tell the true story of proceedings though. Palace were leading for a big chunk of the match. Sadio Mane equalised after half-time.

And, it was that man Mohamed Salah who won the match with six minutes remaining.

West Ham third on Match of the Day

West Ham’s massive win over Southampton is third on Match of the Day.

It was a huge victory for the Hammers, who are now in a much safer place both literally and psychologically than before kick off.

Fourth is Newcastle’s big win over Huddersfield. And on fifth on Match of the Day is Manchester United’s win over Swansea.

Goals from Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku did the damage.

The flagship BBC show ends with Watford 2 – Bournemouth 2, West Brom 1 – Burnley 2 and Brighton 0 – Leicester 2.

“Call me Emir of Iwoland henceforth” – Oluwo drops Oba title

The Oluwo of Iwoland in Osun state, Oba Adbulrasheed Akanbi on Saturday dropped the title of Oba and adopted ‘Emir’,

The Oluwo of Iwoland in Osun state, Oba Adbulrasheed Akanbi on Saturday dropped the title of Oba and adopted ‘Emir’, the title of Northern traditional rulers.

Speaking at the installation and turbarning ceremony of an Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yahquub Abdul-Baaqi Mohammed as first Waziri of Yoruba land, Oba Akanbi said he decided to now bear “Emir of Iwoland” because he wants to emulate the attitude of northern Emirs.

According to him, the monarchs are better behaved than his counterparts from the Southwest.

He lamented that Yoruba Obas are full of “bickering, acrimony and enmities”.

The Oluwo said: “I have decided to officially adopt Emir title today because I want to emulate the attitudes of Northern Emirs. They don’t begrudge themselves like Yoruba Obas.

”It will surprise you to discover that for the past two years, there has not been meeting of Yoruba traditional rulers just because of enmities. There is nothing strange in adopting Emir title. I am the Emir of Yorubaland”.

But the installation of the Waziri was against the warning served on Oluwo by the League of Imams and Alfas in Southwest Nigeria, Edo and Delta States asking him not to install the Waziri.

In a statement, the President, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere Bello had urged Oba Akanbi to limit the title to Iwoland, not the entire Yorubaland.

“The proposed installation of the said recipient by your Highness as the Waziri of Iwo land is no doubt the result of your avowed commitment to the development of lslam, the lwo Community and Osun State in general.

“However, it is our considered hope that your Highness should as a matter of urgency correct the rumours making the round that the organisers of this event are trying to over blow the ceremony to capture the entire Yorubaland. This is not right.”

But Oba Akanbi on Saturday said: “Iwo has a unique and distinctive traditional history among the entire Yoruba race. And these peculiarities have made Iwo to be at the forefront in Yoruba land.

”The occasion of the installation of Waziri Yorubaland is another great opportunity to create the necessary awareness and promote to the entire world the deep Islamic culture and heritage in Iwo.

“Waziri did not come from Northern part of Hausa tribe but from God. So, there is nothing strange in installing Waziri. Yoruba has forgotten their history. Whoever is criticising me lacks history of Yorubaland”.

Your military seizes villagers’ knives, protects AK-47 bearers – Taraba blasts Buhari govt

Days after Governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku said the Buhari administration and the military were aware of security threats

Days after Governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku said the Buhari administration and the military were aware of security threats as well as soldiers’ misconduct but chose to do nothing, the state has again berated the federal government.

Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Dan Bala Abu at the weekend told journalists that although there was relative peace, the state government did not have confidence in the security apparatus of the national government.

He said that the people were continually losing faith in the ability of the present crop of security personal deployed in the state to conduct their affairs in a just and equitable manner.

Abu insisted that the people were not satisfied with the way the military posted to quell the security crisis in Taraba state were harassing them and even collecting their kitchen knives while attackers wielding sophisticated weapons like AK-47 were allowed to go on a killing spree.

“What we are saying is that even the relative peace we are enjoying now, we still do not have confidence in the military.

“We are saying that we have lost confidence in the military because nothing has been done to all our complaints that people were being disarmed and that the military are discriminating in the way they doing it.

“They collect their kitchen knives from them while they leave the other persons who are carrying AK-47. So where is the justice in this matter? That’s why we are saying that we have lost confidence.

“We have the right to say that the people that were posted to restore peace are not doing what is expected of them, that they are biased. It is left for them to find out what is wrong and do what they have do to correct the wrongs being done,” he said.

It would be recalled that retired General TY Danjuma, a Taraba indigene, had advised Nigerians to defend themselves before killer herdsmen wipe them out.

Danjuma, who spoke last Saturday at the maiden convocation ceremony of Taraba State University in Jalingo, the capital, called on the people to rise against “ethnic cleansing”.

“You must rise to protect yourselves from these people, if you depend on the armed forces to protect you, you will all die.

“This ethnic cleansing must stop in Taraba, and it must stop in Nigeria,” Danjuma warned.

Prominent Senegalese lawmaker, Barthelemy Dias, has been arrested for insulting the judiciary after close ally Khalifa Sall was jailed for fraud, his lawyer said Saturday.

Dias is a strong supporter of Sall, the popular Dakar mayor who was sentenced on Friday to five years in prison, a punishment that will rule him out of a presidential election due next February.

The dissident Socialist Party MP was arrested after he made disparaging remarks about the judges in the Sall case. Dias remained in detention on Saturday, his lawyer El Hadji Diouf said.

Supporters of the mayor, accused of misappropriating the equivalent of $2.8 million (2.7 million euros) in public funds, had protested loudly in the packed courtroom at the verdict against him.

“Such comments constitute an intolerable attack on the honour of the magistrates concerned and on the dignity of the entire judiciary,” the Union of Senegalese Magistrates said in a statement, without elaborating on what Dias had actually said.

Both Dias and Sall were banned from the Socialist party in December for alleged violence and disciplinary offences.

Sall, 62, had denied the charges against him, but Friday’s verdict will delay a growing challenge against incumbent President Macky Sall, no relation.

First of all, why always cats?! *side eye Brymo*

Olaitan Hughes is a happy man! The poet whom we have come to know as Sokleva has a lot to be thankful for this year. First he tied the knots with his partner Yinka; then right in the midst of plans to release a new Rooftop MCs album ‘Drunken Masters” the Rooftop MCs rapper and his wife Yinka received their first baby- a Girl- on Sunday, November 29, 2009</p>

Mr Hughes was on his way home from Hype Nigeria’s end-of-year event ‘Call to Bar’ when he received a phone call that his wife was in labour.</p>

“I’ was not there in the Labour room, but I got there as soon as I heard the news. I was at a show in Caliente and went straight from there” the new father told NET on Sunday after he left Regina Mundi Hospital Mushin where the child was delivered.</p>

And of course his second half Kunle Adeyoola was by his side. “We just left the hospital’ he told NET around 2pm on Sunday</p>

“To think we will be shooting our new video tonight”</p>

To be directed by brilliant director Clarence Peters, the song is titled “Experimental Music”.</p>

Olaitan Hughes, 32, was born on October 16,1977. He got married to his partner Yinka earlier this year.</p>

One of the leading Gospel artistes in Nigeria, Roof top MCs released their first album ‘Shock Theraphy” in 2004, followed by “Minority Report” in 2008. Their third album “Drunken Master” will be released before year-end. Already ‘For my life” one of the singles off the album is enjoying massive airplay on radio and TV.</p> ” data-medium-file=”” data-large-file=”” class=”m_-231654795824758629gmail-alignnone m_-231654795824758629gmail-size-full m_-231654795824758629gmail-wp-image-501 CToWUd a6T” tabindex=”0″ src=”https://ci3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/np0oJqXOdkCiC6L-PXpsyScPn2fdTw92FH1-dxoE9WV5-JnIrQmuX4pSx7as_NWU_-I7yIxtrbg6UMDLa6tWT-HSReJKwaeqINU_uwxCCTFyfiJRvh5BX4iUMyxU=s0-d-e1-ft#https://sandrasezekwesili.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/cat-896806695.jpg” alt=”cat-896806695″ width=”615″ height=”338″ />

Brymo’s OṢÓ (The wizard), is his sixth album and to be honest the very first one I’ve listened to from its 1st to its 11th track, in one sitting. For 38 minutes, Brymo takes us on an introspective journey through love and life and the myriad of relationships in between. From “No be me” to the soulful “Bá’núsọ”, this trip is melodious and beyond beautiful. The blend of simple chords, even simpler words that hold such depth, and heartbreaking vocals come together to create something that is absolutely stunning!

The entire album evokes images of a smoke-filled bar from the 50s, complete with a half-naked Brymo crooning at us while some of us sit at the back with our heads thrown back and our eyes closed as we soak him in.

I would have set the interlude ‘’Mama’’ as the intro because it was quite the prayer (“The government dey veto, dey fuck us oh.The thief still dey shit on the good man oh.”) and Nigerian artists tend to put the prayer first, but I guess that’s why he’s Brymo and made the ingenious choice to put it between ‘’No Be Me’’ and ‘’Heya’’, two songs that discuss the same themes (love, politics and human nature and are punctuated by this interlude that laments that things have stayed unchanging.

While it seems like he is, on the one hand, sharing a huge moral lesson about hope and hanging in there in the very cheekily captioned ”Patience and Goodluck”, on the other, you’re not entirely sure he’s not commiserating with the average Nigerian who embraced APC’s change and is campaigning for the return of the PDP. I guess that’s why it is art. It’s all subjective.

God Is in Your Mind” is a reflective piece that combines Brymo’s vocal prowess with a strong guitar-riff. ‘’I’m not the man I used to be’’ he sings. “For the first time, gods are we, without a face. For the first time, gods are we, without a name…For the first time, God is in your mind.” Here, Brymo encourages us to find ourselves first as that is the one path to finding god. A self-discovery that perhaps set him on this uninhibited path where he could shoot the video for ‘’Heya’’ in a string.

brymoo2

‘’Don’t mistake what is fun for what is good’’ he admonishes on ‘’Time Is so Kind’’ while reminding us that holding on to love too tight can cause you to lose it in “Entropy”. ”Entropy” sounded very much like love ballads from the 80s.

Money Launderers and Heart Breakers” is one of my favourites on this album. It is quietly groovy and while it might be a shout to all the hard workers and hustlers, it just might also be an ode to yahoo boys and Yoruba demons (again, Art = Subjective). ”All we do is win, We are grinding when you sleep” he sings. ‘‘Pretty outside but ugly inside. Pretty outside but rotten inside”.

I have no idea what he’s saying in ”Olarenwaju’‘ but I know I love it and very fiercely hate my lack of knowledge of the Yoruba language because this is one of those songs that need you to appreciate it in its raw, untranslated form.

The flute, the talking drum, the tinkling rhythm of the chimes all come together to create something so beautiful.

I would love to watch an alternative dancer interpret this song.

She’ll be dark-skinned, lithe and slender, wearing no underwear under a flowing white chiffon dress that floats when she moves. She will have small, dark, round breasts that are perky and immobile and in defiant display through the dress as she moves (don’t ask, listen to the song).

Olumo” and ”Bá’núsọ”, a mix again of the talking drum, a saxophone, and a ton of other percussion instruments are also a worthy listen.

I love how the first couple of songs end. So abrupt. I had to check to see that my stream hadn’t broken. You’re so immersed in each song, it’s almost rude when it ends the way it does.

Look, Brymo’s music is a whole mood.

If ”Legbegbe” is more your vibe, then this album (Brymo’s music, period) isn’t for you. Forget shaking the acceptability table, he pushed the damn thing down because guess what? Art is supposed to disrupt the status quo. He is not pretending that you are his audience and he realizes that those who understand his art will appreciate this.

I love that a Nigerian is playing in the alternative folk genre and is doing it so well. OṢÓ is one of the best albums out of this country in a short while and I hope that more than listen, you will grab yourself a copy.

My top three songs are ”God Is in Your Mind”, ”Heya” and ”Money Launderers and Heart Breakers” and if ”Heya” is anything to go by, I’m excited to see what he does with the other songs. Oh and I so badly want to hear an Asa/Brymo collaboration (gods of music, make it happen).

Over 5 (1 for meh and 5 for God) this album is a 4.5.

PS. OṢÓ is an album that wants to immerse and fill your mind. The more open you are to letting it wash over you, the more you will get from it. This is mood music, so get in the mood. Whatever you need to do (or take) to put yourself in a relaxed frame of mind to appreciate this work, indulge.

Two persons were on Saturday confirmed dead, after a storey building collapsed in Lagos.

It was gathered that the building situated at No. 9 Abeje Street Markaz, Agege Local Government Area, had been marked ‘distressed’ by the Lagos State Government.

Adesina Tiamiyu, General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA) said the building suffered a partial collapse.

“Investigation carried out by the LASEMA Response Team at the scene of incident revealed that a distress storey building suffered partial collapse at the backside.

“Two persons(female adult Toyin Ogundimu 35yrs and a young girl Sherifat Olalere 11yrs) lost their lives to the incident and one male adult (Mustapher Salaudeen) was rescued and treated at the incident by the ambulance crew”, he explained.
