Tottenham dealt major injury blow during West Brom defeat

Darren Moore produced yet another miracle as manager of West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns as his side defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 to keep their hopes of survival alive.

Spurs were also dealt another huge blow as Jan Vertonghen was forced off injured with the defender clutching his ankle.

The 31-year-old has previously been sidelined with a similar injury and the Belgian national team will be left to sweat over his fitness ahead of next month’s World Cup.

The Baggies remain on course to produce one of the greatest bids for survival the Premier League has ever witnessed, as Moore ensured he remains unbeaten in charge of the club with a win over Spurs.

Former Spurs midfielder Jake Livermore scrambled in a 92nd-minute winner which saw the Hawthorns erupt as their hopes of survival were kept alive.

The three points move them off of the bottom of the table and to within two points of safety heading into the final day of the season.

However, a win for Southampton this evening would still see West Brom relegated with the Saints travelling to Goodison Park to take on Everton.

By Adeboye Amosu:

Nigeria forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, failed to rescue his English Premier League club Leicester City who fell to a 2-0 home defeat against West Ham United at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

Iheanacho was introduced in the 61st minute for Hamza Choudhury in what was his 19th league appearance of the season.

His international teammate, Wilfred Ndidi, as expected was not included in the match day squad as he is still recuperating from the harmstring injury he picked up in last Saturday’s 5-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Portuguese midfielder Joao Mario and captain Mark Noble got the goals for the Hammers.

At the Hawthorns, Tottenham Hotspur lost 1-0 to their hosts West Bromwich Albion.

Jake Livermore scored the winner two minutes into stoppage time. The result, West Brom’s third win in five games since Darren Moore took over as caretaker manager, means West Brom are still in with a chance of surviving the drop.

West Brom are 19th in the table with 31 points from 37 games, while Spurs fourth with 71 points from 36 games.

Watford also defeated Newcastle United 2-1 at Vicarage Road courtesy of two goals by Roberto Pereyra and Andre Gray.

Ayoze Perez netted Newcastle United’s only goal of the game.

In the other fixture, Bournemouth edged out Swansea 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium with Ryan Fraser grabbing the winning goal eight minutes before the break.

At PDP South West rally Atiku, Secondus to the rescue for 2019

Promise victory in Ekiti, Osun Clement Adeyi, Osogbo Ahead of the 2019 General Elections, and the Ekiti and Osun state

Ahead of the 2019 General Elections, and the Ekiti and Osun state elections scheduled for July 14 and September 22 respectively, opposition party PDP on Saturday staged a South West rally in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, to marshal members and activists for victory at the polls.

Party National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus, addressing the gathering of party faithfuls who came from all over the South West, assured that the party would not succumb to any form of intimidation in its quest for victory  in the 2019 General Elections and the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.

Secondus said that the party was on a “mission to rescue the nation” and take power from the ruling APC party in Ekiti, Osun and at the federal level.

The party leader insisted that the PDP would go the whole hog to rescue Nigerians from the Buhari administration which he said had brought poverty on them.

Secondus charged members and party leadership to work hard in order to win the 2019 and governorship polls.

He insisted that ordinary Nigerians were tired of the APC administration, stressing that it had become imperative to unseat it and install a government that would put smiles on the faces of the masses.

“PDP will win the forthcoming governorship election in Osun, Ekiti and the General Election in 2019,” Secondus said.

“APC should start packing their load because they cannot win and we will not succumb to any form of intimidation because we are on a mission to rescue the nation.”

A governorship aspirants in Osun State, Oluomo Gbenga Owolabi, expressed optimism that he would win the election through the party which, he assured, had the capacity to displace the APC at the polls.

He urged the party faithful to cast their votes for him based on the impact he had made on the lives of the people of the state, especially in infrastructure development.

In the same vein, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar urged the party members and leaders to unite ahead of the 2019 polls to be able to obtain a win against the APC.

Atiku added that the party would do everything possible to wrest power from the APC in 2019 and install a people-oriented government in the next administration.

Former governor of Jigawa State Alhaji Sule Lamido urged party members to be prepared to form a united front ahead of the General Elections and put the ruling APC out of power.

“I know you and you know me; let’s prepare for the 2019 General Election and obtain a well deserved victory,” Lamido said.

When Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose mounted the podium, he chanted a Yoruba song of victory, “Buhari alo, Buhari alo, Osinbajo a-tele” (“Buhari will go and Osinbajo will follow him”) to an uproarious response from the crowd.

Hours before the political campaign, the state capital was alive with activity and anticipation as thousands of party members and leaders from different parts of the South West trooped into the city, with the streets strewn with campaign posters of aspirants for governor, party flags, memorabilia, and campaign songs.

Presidential hopeful Atiku Abubakar’s team hit Osogbo in large numbers singing, chanting tribute songs to the former Vice President and for the party’s victory at the General and governorship elections.

There was tight security as Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) with men and officers of the Nigerian Police who mounted surveillance in strategic areas.

Others armed officers moved around town to enforce and maintain public order.

A web platform developed by the National Institute for Science, Technology and Innovation in Seychelles (NISTI) has inspired the creation of a similar one for Africa to provide information from various sectors and countries.

The setting up of the African web platform was the purpose of a consultative four-day meeting held in Seychelles earlier this week by the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) and the African Observatory for Science, Technology and Innovation (AOSTI).

Member countries of the two organisations met at the NISTI office at Bel Ombre in the north of Mahe, the main island, to discuss the model and ways to implement the database. The platform will be an accessible repository data platform to help African countries in evidence-based policy and decision-making. It is expected to be launched by June this year.

From Seychelles News.

NISTI started the local data web-platform in 2016 with the aim of collecting information related to education, research development and innovation but now hopes to cover more sectors.

According to the chief executive of NISTI Xavier Estico, the main aim of the platform is to make the sharing of data easily accessible in the island nation.

“Such a portal will be beneficial for decision-makers, the general public, academia, students, lecturers and school,” said Estico, who recognizes that there is a big challenge to get people to share information and work together.

England fans are seriously worried about Tottenham’s Harry Kane ahead of the World Cup

Supporters of England have taken to Twitter in their numbers this afternoon to express their concerns about the form of Tottenham striker Harry Kane, ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

Matchup

Spurs travelled to the Hawthorns for a 3pm Premier League clash, with hosts West Brom aware ahead of kick-off that anything other than 3 points would see their relegation to the Championship confirmed.

The Baggies had only maintained their Premier League status to this point thanks to some heroic performances over the last couple of weeks, with new manager Darren Moore having inspired the club to 2 wins and 2 draws from their last 4 outings.

Tottenham, meanwhile, bounced back from 3 games without a win to put Watford to the sword by 2 goals to nil last time out, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men aware that a slip-up could prove costly with Chelsea creeping ever-closer to the North Londoners in the race for the final spot in next season’s Champions League.

Teams

1-0

Another disappointing performance on the part of Spurs this afternoon saw the capital giants struggle to create clear-cut chances, and eventually pay the ultimate price for their disappointing showing.

Incredibly, as the fixture entered the final minutes of injury-time, Baggies’ midfielder Jake Livermore bundled home his second goal in the space of 3 games to send the Hawthorns crowd into raptures and keep the impossible dream of Premier League safety alive for Darren Moore’s men.

Worrying

While today marked another incredible outing for West Brom, the opposite could only be said for visitors Tottenham, who looked laboured and lacking in ideas en route to their 3rd loss in 5 across all competitions.

And, while the likes of Erik Lamela and Danny Rose came in for hefty criticism, fans of England couldn’t help but point to yet another sub-par showing on behalf of Harry Kane.

The normally-prolific hitman has looked some way short of his best since seemingly being rushed back from an injury at the start of the month, with the Three Lions faithful having taken to Twitter this evening to express their concern regarding the form of their first-choice striker ahead of this summer’s World Cup:

My Reelection Bid Not For Personal Gain, Buhari Says At APC Ward Congress

SAN FRANCISCO, May 05, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday in Daura, Katsina State, said the driving force for seeking

SAN FRANCISCO, May 05, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday in Daura, Katsina State, said the driving force for seeking public office should be to serve the people, and see their lives improved, not for frivolity or personal ambition.

Speaking at the All Progressives Party’s (APC) Ward Congress held at Bayagida Model Primary School, President Buhari said the passion to serve and see real changes in the lives of Nigerians informed his choice to join partisan politics in the first place, and inspired him to contest elections in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015.

A statement his spokesman, Garba Shehu, noted the President said that his decision to seek a second term in office was borne out of a deep passion to serve Nigerians, and not for personal gains.

“I am not in politics for fun, frivolity or to amass wealth, I have always been driven by a deep sense of commitment to make a difference to the lives of our people.

“After my retirement from the army, or forceful retirement, I sat back and watched as events unfolded on the political turf, and realised the country needed an intervention for fairness, justice and inclusion of Nigerians in the issues that affect their lives,’’ he said.

The President called for patience, maturity and orderliness as the 2019 elections’ calendar begins to unfold, urging political parties, candidates and the electorate to put the country first and always remember that victory ultimately belongs to God.

“After going to the court so many times to challenge results of elections in 2003, 2007 and 2011, and going up to the Supreme Court, I concluded that ultimately it is God who determines who will win elections, and in 2015 I got here,’’ he added.

Controversies trail APC ward congress in Bauchi State

Paul Orude, Bauchi A faction of the All Progressives Party (APC) in Bauchi State loyal to House Speaker Yakubu Dogara

Paul Orude, Bauchi

A faction of the All Progressives Party (APC) in Bauchi State loyal to House Speaker Yakubu Dogara has warned the chairman of the Ward and Local Government Congress Committee, Dr Tony Macfoy, to abide by the guidelines of the party during the conduct of the ward congress in the state.

The warning was contained in a petition letter addressed to the state chairman of the APC, Alhaji Uba Ahmed Nana, dated May 4, 2018 made available to journalists by a member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly representing Lere/Bula Constituency, Mohammed Aminu Tukur.

The state lawmaker disclosed that Ahmed Nana issued a directive that only forms that come through the party office in the state would be valid for the ward election contrary to the national position.

Aminu stressed that the position of the APC Chairman contradicted the National office that “forms are given to state committees on the directives of the national leadership of the party to be sold to candidates/aspirants who may be denied such forms on the instructions of some sitting governors as applied to Bauchi State.”

The letter further stated that:

“In view of the above, you are hereby requested to allow for free flow of democratic principles without being biased,” warning that “Any breach of peace and security in this regard, you would be held responsible.”

In the same vein, Senator Nazif Suleiman (Bauchi North) expressed anger over the delay in providing materials for the exercise, alleging that there was a ploy by Governor Mohammed Abubakar to deny candidates who are not loyal to him from contesting.

“Everybody is geared towards the elections. We are fully ready. We paid about N13 million for tellers for purchase of the forms but to our greatest surprise we haven’t got the forms and it is surprising that we look for the committee that is charged with conducting the election and they are yet to be found,” Suleiman complained.

“The last meeting they had was with the governor at Government House. The meeting was supposed to be held at the party office, but to our greatest surprise there was no meeting at the party secretariat.

“We were shocked that the chairman of the ward/local government congress committee (Dr Tony Macfoy) was praising the Governor instead of telling us how the election was going to hold. He left his responsibility to say that the election would be controlled. I have been in politics for 26 years and have not heard of the word ‘controlled election’. We have paid for the forms and we believe that the forms should be given to those that will contest and up till this moment we haven’t got them and our supporters and executives who we bought these forms for do not have these (nomination) forms nomination,” he said.

Senator Gamawa alleged that the Macfoy-led committee came with two forms – one for the coordinators of the Governor and the other to “whom they wanted to give to. We thought it was going to be an all-inclusive election, and the people of Bauchi are waiting. But unfortunately only one group has forms that belong to the Government House.”

The concerned senator said that the group had to call APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun who assured them that “If forms are not given to those who purchased them, then the elections stands nullified.”

Reacting to the allegation of siding with one group loyal to the State governor, Macfoy stated that it was untrue, maintaining that there are no factions in the APC.

“Don’t bring [up] that word ‘group’,” he said.

“There is no division in the APC. We are one family. There are family intrigues and politics but does that mean there is a faction?”

Making assurances that the committee would be fair, Macfoy said that they party would abide by the guidelines in the conduct of the state ward congress.

On the delay in mobilising materials for the exercise in the 20 local government areas to cover the 212 wards in the state, Macfoy said it was due to their late arrival to the State on Friday, assuring that materials have been deployed for the conduct of the exercise, adding that it would hold on the stated date.

In the state ward elections, 27 positions are being contested in each of Bauchi’s 212 wards, bringing the total of positions to 5,724

Jurgen Klopp reveals targets for the remainder of the season

Jurgen Klopp believes that Liverpool qualifying for Champions League would be “a massive success” following the poor luck they have had this season.

The German manager claims that his side have been unfortunate with injuries this season, however, he believes that the players have pulled together very well to help their bid for the top-four.

On Wednesday, the Reds reached the final of the Champions League as they defeated AS Roma 7-6 on aggregate and now they travel to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon for a huge game in the race for the top four.

“A big success”

Whilst the Reds have a Champions League final in Kiev to prepare for, their attentions are fully on tomorrow’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

A win in West London would secure Liverpool Champions League football next season, which Klopp believes would be a “massive achievement”.

Klopp said:

“It would be massive.

“It was actually the main target we had at the start of the season.

“You want to be champions but it was clear after a few months that would not be possible.

“The target is qualifying for the Champions League. That would be a big success.

“With the group we’ve got, with how we came to the final and playing with the biggest intensity, being ready again, then the injuries we had, it would be a massive success.

“It’s all about the players and what they did so far is absolutely exceptional. The problem is that Sunday is also important.”
