Wisdom From Wakanda: 5 Transportation Insights From Black Panther

Wakanda in Black Panther Marvel’s “Black Panther”, which will be released on video-on-demand and Blu-ray this week, concluded its record-breaking box office

insights From Black Panther
Wakanda in Black Panther

Marvel’s “Black Panther”, which will be released on video-on-demand and Blu-ray this week, concluded its record-breaking box office run with more than $1.3 billion in global ticket sales, knocking off “Titanic” as the third highest-grossing domestic film of all time.

Beyond its compelling performances, colorful costumes and powerful cultural commentary, the movie also challenges how we think about our transportation infrastructure.

Much of the movie takes place in the fictional country of Wakanda, a technologically advanced and traditionally xenophobic African nation powered by an imaginary metal called vibranium. Although Wakanda and vibranium are works of fiction, the film nonetheless paints a compelling vision of the future of transportation, one that can inspire much-needed conversation around real-world issues like mass transit and land use.

Here are five insights from the film that challenge prevailing approaches to transportation. While these insights will be more comprehensible for those who have seen the movie, their value and relevance will not escape those who haven’t.

1) A common technology creates valuable efficiencies

Because most of its technology is vibranium-based, Wakanda uses electromagnetism to power its infrastructure. The country’s subways and elevated trains glide through electromagnetic rings, and its street cars are levitated and propelled by vibranium strips in the road. Building an entire transportation ecosystem on a single technology like this creates significant operational and economic efficiencies. A system rooted in a single technology would allow us to consolidate power generation and distribution, focus maintenance activities and make systemwide upgrades more expediently. Many today are hopeful that electric-powered systems, whether in the form of cars, buses, roadways or railways, emerge as our common transit technology. Of course, building everything on a single technology also has drawbacks. It reduces diversity and redundancy, making a system more vulnerable.

2) Multidimensional transit eliminates congestion

Today, most of the world’s transportation infrastructure is one-dimensional. It packs people, cars, trucks, buses and trains onto a single horizontal plane. Given this, it’s no wonder that cities around the world struggle with traffic congestion. In Wakanda, however, different modes of transportation, from streetcars to elevated trains to subways to aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, operate at different spatial elevations, from underground to overhead. This creates a multidimensional transit system that helps distribute traffic vertically, not just horizontally, thereby alleviating congestion and increasing overall efficiency. Wakanda illustrates the benefits of this approach and can help us visualize why investment in subterranean transit and drone taxi programs, like those being explored by Uber Elevate and Dubai, is worthwhile.

3) A pedestrian-first approach cultivates culture

Although only shown briefly in the film, downtown Wakanda is portrayed as a bustling center for entertainment, dining and trade, where citizens walk down pedestrian-friendly streets lined with vendors and restaurants. Even the leisurely speed of the streetcars demonstrates Wakanda’s emphasis on pedestrian safety. This approach is more than just pedestrian-friendly. It’s pedestrian-first. Wakanda’s pedestrian-centricity fuels spontaneous social interaction, valuable foot traffic for businesses and a deeper sense of community without compromising mobility. The most celebrated cities in the world, like New York City and Paris, have many of these qualities. As cities everywhere look to be more aggressive in courting new residents and corporations, they’d do well to find ways to increase walkability and make their urban experience as pedestrian-first as possible.

4) Investing in technology over amenities improves experience

While only glimpsed briefly, the interiors of Wakanda’s streetcars and train cars appear to be rather plain and utilitarian. Although this lack of decor and amenities could have simply been an oversight or a cost-saving decision on the part of the filmmakers, it nonetheless points to an interesting insight: the in-transit experience becomes less important when the mode of transit is expedient and efficient. For instance, the total travel time by air from Houston to Chicago, including security wait times and downtime at the gate, is around four and a half hours. As a result, passengers demand a host of amenities in the terminal and on the plane. Virgin’s Hyperloop One, however, could hypothetically make the same trip in under two hours, making all those amenities less critical.

5) Better transit helps balance development and nature

Although Wakanda’s urban center is its most technologically advanced district, the country also encompasses outlying agrarian lands whose residents have access to the same level of personal technology as their urban counterparts. This model of land use, which envisions a dense city center for commerce and entertainment surrounded by more rural but equally as affluent districts, provides an alternative to the sprawling suburban model of most American cities. A sufficiently advanced transportation network, such as Wakanda’s, remediates the need for suburbs by efficiently connecting various districts regardless of proximity. This allows more disparate areas to retain their natural splendor without sacrificing access to the urban center. While seemingly utopian or idyllic, the harmony between technology and nature showcased in Black Panther is indeed achievable, but only if we reimagine the relationship between infrastructure, communities and land.

While a science fiction movie may seem like a strange place to look for inspiration on infrastructure, artists and engineers were one and the same for much of history. See Leonardo da Vinci. Even as recently as the 20th century, some of the world’s most accomplished engineers were also prominent futurists, such as George Morison, who served as President of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1895. Indeed, art and engineering have a longstanding friendship, as Black Panther welcomingly reminds us.

Ultimately, the infrastructure we have today may not be the infrastructure we need tomorrow. It’s the imagination and creativity of movies like Black Panther that allow us — and sometimes force us — to envision a different future. Now it’s up to us to build it.

Diamond-Hope’s 10 Best Looks From Met Gala 2018

The Met Gala may be over but these looks will be staying with us for a long time. Here are

The Met Gala may be over but these looks will be staying with us for a long time.

Here are the 10 best Met Gala looks at this year’s red carpet:

1) Rita Ora

Rita Ora was definitely one of the best looks of the night with a Prada gown which had hints of neon and a dramatic train.

2) Lilly Collins

Lilly Collins gave us an all-black look from Clare Waight Keller’s debut Givenchy Haute Couture collection. The details of her makeup, with gemstones, perfectly placed under each eye? Well, of course, she killed it.

3) Rihanna

She slayed, as usual. The end.

4) Chadwick Boseman

While most men decide to play it safe and wear their regular red carpet suits and leave the drama to the women, Chadwick was having none of that. He stuck with the theme and totally aced it.

5) Zendaya

You know the saying about women waiting for their knight in shining armour to arrive? Zendaya is here ladies!

6) Nicki Minaj

Her Oscar De La Renta gown brought a pop of colour to the Met Gala. It may be a bit too far fetched but nothing Nicki Minaj’s outfit reminds us remotely of an angel who fell from heaven…

7) Cardi B

She may be pregnant but that didn’t stop her from delivering this amazing look.

8)

Simple yet one of the best looks of the Met Gala. Aside from sticking with the theme here’s a fun fact about her look for the night: her lipstick is the exact same colour as her dress.

9) Blake Lively

Blake Lively had one of the most talked about dresses from the Met Gala. Its long train combined with the blend of red and gold bodice gave her a stunning regal look.

10) Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was one of many stars to choose an angelic look in a caped Ralph Lauren gown, topped with a gold halo.

Moment Kendall Jenner SHOVES Assistant Out Of The Way In Epic Met Gala Diva Moment

Never get in the way of a supermodel and her photo opportunity. This video shows the incredible moment Kendall Jenner

Never get in the way of a supermodel and her photo opportunity. This video shows the incredible moment Kendall Jenner shoved an assistant out of the way of her shot at the Met Gala .

The supermodel, 22, was stood in her white jumpsuit – dubbed 'toilet paper chic' – as photographers snapped away.

However, a man working at the gala almost got in her way. The gentleman, dressed in a suit and with a walkie talkie in his pocket, took a slight backwards step towards the star, and it seems she didn't appreciate it.

And the moment she shoved him out the way was captured on E!'s live stream of the red carpet.

Kendall can be seen turning towards the man as he catches her eye and holding up a gloved hand to him.

She places her hand on his back and shoves him out of the way. He turns to look over his shoulder, and probably wanted the ground to open up and swallow him whole.

Kendall clearly wanted to make sure all the attention was on her. And it was, but probably for the wrong reason.

A few people watching the live stream spotted what she did at the event, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and couldn't believe it.

Taking to Twitter, one said: “Who does kendall think she is? Did y'all see her push that security guy out of the way!?? #MetGala.”

Another who spotted it commented: “Kendall Jenner shows up to the #MetGala in the most bland toilet paper outfit and had the nerve to push one of the handlers out of the way who was just doing his job on the carpet #rude”

Lagos To Arraign Danish Citizen In Court Over Murder Of Wife, Daughter

The Lagos State Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) on Tuesday recommended the trial of Danish citizen, Peter Nielsen, who was

The Lagos State Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) on Tuesday recommended the trial of Danish citizen, Peter Nielsen, who was accused of killing his wife Zainab, and his three-year-old daughter, Petra for murder before the state high court.

This recommendation was contained in a legal advice send to Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Kikelomo Ayeye, of Yaba Chief Magistrate Court, before whom the foreigner is currently facing a two count charge of murder.

The DPP advice is necessary because a magistrate court is not constitutionally empowered to conduct a murder trial.

Following the development, Chief Magistrate Ayeye, on Monday further ordered the remand of the defendant in custody for another 30 days, to enable the police and the Lagos state government file criminal charge of murder against him before a High Court in the state.

It will be recalled that Nielsen, was brought before the court on April 11, by the legal department of the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (SCIID) of the police for alleged killing his wife and daughter.

After the charge was read to him, the court ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody pending the issuance of an advice by the DPP on the matter.

Parts of DPP’s advice reads: “I’m directed to acknowledged receipt of your letter with reference No. CB/3514/LSX/01/Vol.5/11, dated 14 April, 2018, the accompanying duplicate case file forwarded to this office for legal advice.

“After carefully considering the facts available in the duplicate case file, this office is of the considered opinion that a prima facie case of murder contrary to section 233 of the criminal law Ch. C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos state, 2015, exist against the suspect Page B1, Peter Nielsen.

“This office shall therefore prosecute the suspect Page B1, Peter Nielsen, for murder of Zainab Nielsen, and Patra Nielsen, of offence contrary to Section 223, of the Criminal laws Ch. C17, Vol. 3, laws of Lagos state, 2015”.

The matter has been adjourned till June 28, for his possible arraignment at the state High Court.

Fans react to West Brom boss Darren Moore’s Manager of the Month award

West Bromwich Albion manager Darren Moore has this evening been named as the Premier League Manager of the Month for

West Bromwich Albion manager Darren Moore has this evening been named as the Premier League Manager of the Month for April, following an inspired run of form on the part of the Baggies since his arrival at the club.

Turnaround

Moore, 44, took over the reigns at West Brom on the 2nd of April, following the sacking of Alan Pardew.

With the Baggies having been glued to the bottom of the Premier League table and without a league win since January, most viewed Moore’s caretaker appointment as little more than an acceptance on the part of West Brom’s board that the club were set for an inevitable relegation to the Championship.

However, incredibly, the former Portsmouth defender has since led his side to 11 Premier League points from a possible 15, with victories over Manchester United and Tottenham, as well as a draw with Liverpool, having all come during this span.

Of his 5 games since taking charge at the Hawthorns, 4 came in April, including the aforementioned miraculous 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

And, as announced by the Premier League this evening, Moore’s stellar work over the course of last month has seen him awarded, with the Manager of the Month prize for April:

‘Deserved’

Fans have since taken to Twitter in their numbers to express their delight at the choice to hand the award to Moore, with a common theme amongst the slew of posts online having been the use of the word ‘deserved’:

Court Orders Temporary Forfeiture Of Jonathan’s $8m To FG

A Federal High Court, Lagos, has ordered that the sum of over eight million dollars and over nine billion naira linked

A Federal High Court, Lagos, has ordered that the sum of over eight million dollars and over nine billion naira linked to the former First Lady, Patience Jonathan and six others, be temporary forfeited to the Federal government of Nigeria.

Joined as respondents alongside Mrs. Jonathan in the suit are Globus Integrated Service Limited, Finchley Top Homes Limited, AM-PM Global Network Limited, Pagmat Oil and Gas Limited, and Magel Resort Limited, and one Esther Oba.

The court presided over by Justice Majisola Olatoregun, had on April 14, struck out the same application, for abuse of court processes.

However, the court ordered that the monies be temporary forfeited to the federal government, after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had on April 19, filed the application on the ground that it had consolidated all other suits of the same subject matter and parties.

After granting the EFCC’s application, Justice Olatoregun ordered the EFCC to publish the forfeiture order in any national newspaper, within fourteen days, so that any persons who have interest in the monies should show cause while the monies will not be permanently forfeited to the federal government.

The matter has been adjourned till Friday, for further hearing.
