Uber’s ‘Skyport’ plans are straight out of science fiction

Subscribe Uber’s flying taxi service– that glorious sci-fi dream – still plans to launch its first takeoffs by 2023. One

Uber's flying taxi service– that glorious sci-fi dream – still plans to launch its first takeoffs by 2023. One major caveat, however, is that unlike regular taxis which can freely zip about the streets, UberAIR taxis need access to the sky and a place to land. That's where “Skyports” come in: special areas localized specifically for launching, landing, and customer pickup, and they're looking appropriately futuristic.

During the second day of Uber's Elevate Summit 2018, the company revealed concepts for its air taxi ports. While still at the early developmental stages, Uber plans to support over 4,000 passengers per hour, per Skyport. These initial blueprints come from Corgan, an architecture firm keen on “transforming urban air mobility” with what it calls “Connect,” an infrastructure that will enable up to 1,000 Uber eVTOLs (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) each hour.

The Connect system is composed of a single module that can be easily adapted for use on open sites like the topmost level of parking garages or skyscraper roofs. The module itself consists of four parts. First there's the Connection Plaza, a hub area which keeps the system tethered to pre-established highways, and provides a nice entryway for those rushing off to an important business meeting; the Bridge facilitates intuitive passenger flow. Corgan hasn't forgotten customer service either – the hypothetical Station will apparently be a hotspot for urban commuters, and will offer restaurants, amenities and a shopping precinct. Lastly, the Flight Deck will be the part that connects passengers with their dedicated Uber air taxi pod. The firm added that each paired module can manage 180 landings per hour.

According to Corgan's press release: “Our vision for Connect is to address the greater needs of the community and take advantage of the un-utilized space found above highways in every major city.”

A number of different Skyport designs have been submitted by other companies, too. Engineering company Gannett Fleming envisions a system that boasts up to 52 take-offs an hour per module and would accommodate 600 arrivals and departures, also within an hour. Imagine a cluster of smallish helipads glued together and you've got the basic idea. Other ideas take design cues from nature. Architecture group Humphreys & Partners, for example, is trying out a beehive structure (seen below) that will act as a nest for 900 passengers.

During his presentation on stage, Mark Moore, the director of Uber's Aircraft Engineering Systems, said the company would be using an “all-electric battery” for the vehicles themselves and is “not embracing hybrid” systems as a solution. If you're worried about environmental noise, Moore claimed the air taxis will be around 15 dB quieter than a similarly sized helicopter, and said more companies are tackling “ultra-low noise signature efficiency” as personalized sky travel becomes more readily available.

He believes that air mobility services could be 10 to 20 times safer than current helicopter trips – the air taxi service will be operated by commercial pilots who undergo specific training – but also feature some level of background autonomy after extensive testing, similar to Uber's self-driving cars.

Uber has faced issues with its ground-based autonomous driving project and things are far more complicated when you're flying in the air. Moore emphasized that UberAIR's DEP redundancy (distributed electric propulsion redundancy) could help reduce the likelihood of mechanical accidents and crashes. There's only one way to find out. Uber plans to start aircraft testing by 2020.

She said the government, through the Lagos State Employability Support Project, has also firmed up plans to produce 10,000 skilled persons within three years to cater for demand in key sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, construction, entertainment, garment making and tourism and hospitality.

“In addition, the project will place at least 6,000 trained persons in jobs and upgrade the equipment and improve the curriculum at two of Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB’s) Colleges,” she said.

Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has stated that the team will be ready for the pre-World Cup friendlies against the Democratic Republic of Congo, England and Czech Republic, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The three-time African champions will entertain the DR Congo in Port Harcourt on May 28 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka, Port Harcourt before facing the Three Lions of England in a high-profile friendly on June 2nd at the Wembley Stadium.

Gernot Rohr’s men will also face Czech Republic on June 6 at the Rudolf Tonn Stadium, just outside Vienna.

“We are not focusing on any particular game; we are getting ready to face all the teams that we have to play before the World Cup. It is the right mentality to approach the games,” the Trabzonspor star told the official website of the Nigeria Football Federation.

“I have been asked several questions about the match against England, but I tell people that the England match is very important, just like the other matches that we have to play.

“What is key for us is to get into the right psychological state to confront every opposition that lie ahead, including those that will be waiting at the FIFA World Cup.”

The Super Eagles enjoyed a stellar qualifying campaign navigating  their way through a tough qualifying group that had Zambia, Algeria and Cameroon.

They have also defeated Argentina and Poland in tune-up games ahead of the World Cup.

“There is nothing like over-confidence. What I can say is that we are a very ambitious team and we will always be ready to play any team,” Onazi added.

“Yes, we defeated Argentina and Poland, but that has not in any way generated feelings of over-confidence in the camp. We are focused and have our heads on our shoulders.

“For us, humility and hard work will be the winning words going ahead. Our preparation is going on well and we are happy with that.

“At the World Cup, we will come up against different teams with different styles and approaches of play. It is important that we are adequately prepared and we appreciate the games that the NFF has lined up for us.”

The Super Eagles will face Iceland, Croatia and Argentina in Group D at the World Cup in June.

Michael Carrick reveals best player he played with and it isn’t Ronaldo

Big praise Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has revealed the best player he has played with in his career ahead

Big praise

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has revealed the best player he has played with in his career ahead of his retirement after this weekends game.

The Englishman will retire from football after the game with Watford and Jose Mourinho has already confirmed he will start the game.

Carrick has won all there is to be won in this country and has done it all with Manchester United, going down as a brilliant servant to the club.

While he has played with some incredible players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, and Wayne Rooney, he puts one former player above all of them.

That comes in the form of his midfield partner Paul Scholes, who is widely considered one of the greatest ever Premier League midfielders.

“I still think I’m just fortunate to have seen him train every day and having the best seat in the house, stood next to him passing the ball and seeing what he could do with it,” he explained to ESPN FC.

“It was just outrageous how good he was. I could pick 10-15 players that I played with over the years, Ronaldo, Wazza [Rooney], Rio [Ferdinand], Giggsy, Gaz Nev, he was an unbelievable full-back, unbelievable captain. But Scholesy just nicks it.”

The pressure of football

Not only has Carrick admitted the best player he played with, he also revealed the most stressful moment.

Though, it isn’t much of a surprise as he cited his nerves stepping up to his penalty kick against Manchester United in the Champions League final.

“The feeling before that, you wouldn’t wish it on anyone. It’s hard enough watching [penalties] because you’re on edge,” he explained.

“But having to actually get yourself in the frame of mind to take one, in the back of your mind knowing the consequences if you miss, it’s a tough place to be.”

FG Commits N300bn On Road Infrastructure — Fashola

The Federal Government said on Thursday in Abuja that it had committed N300 billion so far on road infrastructure compared

The Federal Government said on Thursday in Abuja that it had committed N300 billion so far on road infrastructure compared to only N18 billion which the previous administration spent.

Mr Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, said this during the 4th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) with the theme: “Road Infrastructure in Nigeria: Impacts on Petroleum Products Distribution”.

“It is one thing to have a plan, it is another thing to commit to the faithful implementation of that plan.

“Let me remind you that the budget I inherited from the Ministry of Works in the last administration was N18 billion for all the roads in Nigeria.

“Only N9 billion was paid out of the budget but the last budget in the state that I left for road was about N74 billion for one state, while the whole country budgeted N18 billion during the time of Transformation Agenda.

“That was when the country was earning about 100 dollars for one barrel of oil; but this is the time of economic recovery and growth plan which has committed close to N300 billion to road and with funding of about N260 billion.

“And this is happening when oil price is below 100 dollars per barrel; meaning that this administration is doing more with less resources.”

He said that the government had identified six priority areas of road that needed urgent attention.

The minister noted that there was no state in the country where road construction or rehabilitation was not currently ongoing, adding that 300 roads across Nigeria were under construction.

He said the six areas of focus were the roads with the heaviest traffic (A1-A4 roads) like Lagos-Shagamu, Ore-Benin, Enugu-Onitsha and Calabar.

He said that the contractor had gone back to site on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Fashola further said that roads connecting agricultural development areas, roads leading to ports and depots, roads inside higher institutions and comprehensive maintenance of bridges and repairs were being given priority at the moment.

He, however, added that the biggest causes of road accidents based on the monthly reports given to the ministry, was speeding.

According to him, 10 per cent of the accidents are caused by bad roads. He, therefore, charged tanker drivers to put safety first.

Also speaking, Dr Maikanti Baru, the Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), acknowledged the role of tanker drivers in resolving the challenges of distribution of products during periods of fuel scarcity.

He said that with the help of the association, NNPC was able to apprehend those involved in fuel diversion and smuggling.

Baru pledged NNPC’s continuous dialogue and collaboration with the association, to ensure smooth distribution of fuel products in the country.

In his remark, Dr Salimon Oladiti, the National Chairman, Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch of NUPENG, said the theme centered around the major concern of its members, which was road infrastructure.

“The theme for this conference centres around the major condition of work for our teeming members, which is road infrastructure and its impact on our efficiency and effective delivery on petroleum products.”

Oladiti, however, commended members of the association for their continuous support and commitment to the newly commissioned PTD hotels in Utako District, Abuja.(NAN)
