Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck set for move to Turkey

Reports have today emerged from Turkish media outlet Fotospor that Danny Welbeck is one of several names Turkish side Besiktas

Reports have today emerged from Turkish media outlet Fotospor that Danny Welbeck is one of several names Turkish side Besiktas are interested in signing this summer.

A disappointing campaign

Besiktas finished the 2017/18 season in 4th place in the Turkish Super Lig. This means they have both missed out on the title and also only qualify for the Europa League next season as just the top two sides in the Turkish Super Lig earn a Champions League spot.

But Besiktas will feel hard done by as despite finishing 4th they were just one point off  2nd and four points off first.

So, they will be keen to ensure that doesn’t happen again next season and bringing in a player of Welbeck’s quality could certainly go some way to preventing that.

Loss of a star striker

As well as narrowly missing out on a Champions League spot this season, Besiktas have also had to say goodbye to their top goal scorer.

Talisca, who was on a two-year loan from Portuguese side Benfica has now returned back to his parent club.

Talisca enjoyed two very successful seasons in Turkey. In the 2016/17 season, he scored 13 goals in 22 league appearances for Besiktas. And in the 2017/18 season, he scored 20 in 47 appearances for Besiktas, including four in the Champions League.

Sadly for Besiktas, Talisca is likely to stay with Benfica next season, meaning they need to find a new top goal scorer.

Pushed out

While Welbeck, like quite a lot of Arsenal players, is injury prone, he is still a quality player. In 28 Premier League appearances last season, a fair few of which were as a sub, Welbeck still managed to score five times.

Also, with the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Arsenal over the past year, Welbeck is finding himself increasingly out of favour. So, he could benefit from a move elsewhere and Besiktas could suit him well.

Boost for Man United in Savic chase as agent of potential replacement endorses Lazio move

The agent of Besiktas midfielder Oguzhan Özyakup has today endorsed a move for his client to Serie A outfit Lazio, also confirming the interest of Everton and AC Milan.

Surplus to requirements

Ozyakup, a 25-year-old central/attacking midfielder, spent four years with Arsenal’s youth setup from 2008 to 2012, having arrived at the club from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar.

However, the technically-gifted starlet failed to make the grade amongst the wealth of talents available to Arsene Wenger in North London, and was eventually sold to Besiktas 6 years ago for a paltry £400,000.

Reinvigorated

In the end, a move away from the Emirates proved the best possible decision for Ozyakup, though, with the Dutch-born Turkish international having since gone on to establish himself as an absolute mainstay in Besiktas’ midfield, as well as being named the club’s captain.

He has also managed to rack up 32 caps for Turkey, with Arda Turan having previously stated that Ozyakup is the man to take over leadership of the national team once he decides to call time on his international career.

Over the last two seasons in the Turkish top-flight, the former Arsenal man racked up an impressive 14 goals and 14 assists, with his contributions having helped steer his side to a momentous Super Lig crown last season.

Replacement?

Ozyakup’s stellar recent form has led to growing links between the midfielder and a number of Europe’s top clubs, with Arsenal rumoured to be keen on bringing their former youth star back to North London.

However, as per a report from theLaziali.com, SEG, Ozyakup’s agency, revealed in an interview earlier today that the Besiktas star (who’s contract at Vodafone Park is set to expire this summer) could instead be set for a move to Serie A outfit Lazio, as a possible replacement for Manchester United and PSG target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic:

‘I can confirm that Lazio, Marseille, Everton, Milan and Valencia are all observing and are interested in Oguzhan. He would be the perfect addition to Lazio’s side, given the possibility that Sergej Milinkovic-Savic will be leaving the club in the summer, and given the age of both Lucas Leiva and Marco Parolo.’

Liverpool are keen on making a move in the summer for Benfica striker Anderson Talisca, who is currently on loan at Besiktas, according to Turkish source Fanatik.

The Brazilian has impressed during his time at the Champions league club netting 16 goals in 38 appearances this season, attracting interest from all around Europe.

Liverpool, along with Manchester United and Championship leaders Wolves, have been tracking the player sending scouts to watch him in action with the view to a potential summer move.

Talisca was named in the latest Brazilian squad, alongside current Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino, with the club hopeful this can help give them the edge over their rivals for the player’s signature.

Firmino is the Reds’ current forward who leads the line at Anfield however, manager Jurgen Klopp is keen to add another top striker to his squad ahead of next season.

Benfica value the player at just £18m, meaning there is likely to be a large scramble to sign the player this summer.

Man United and Wolves are set to rival both Liverpool and Besiktas for Talisca, with the Turkish club especially keen to sign the 24-year-old on a permanent basis.

The Red Devils during the week were reported to be close to agreeing a deal with Benfica, however, Klopp and Liverpool are looking to hijack any potential transfer.

A Thiago Alcantara strike and Sandro Wagner’s first Champions League goal capped Bayern Munich’s 3-1 win at Besiktas on Wednesday as the German giants cruised into the quarter-finals for the seventh year in a row.

Bayern completed a comprehensive 8-1 aggregate victory in Istanbul, having effectively clinched the last-16 tie following a 5-0 rout last month in the first leg in Munich.

For Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti in October, this was his 11th straight win in the Champions League which set a new competition record.

After Thiago fired home early on, an own goal by Besiktas right-back Gokhan Gonul put Bayern 2-0 up right at the start of the second half.

With their team 7-0 down overall, Besiktas finally came to life, grabbing a consolation goal by Vagner Love.

But Bayern notched their third of the evening when backup striker Sandro Wagner came off the bench to mark his Champions League debut with his first goal at this level.

Having resisted the urge to name a weakened team after their first-leg romp, Bayern wasted little time taking the lead against the Turkish champions.

Top scorer Robert Lewandowski surprisingly started up front, leaving Wagner waiting for his elite European debut until the last 20 minutes.

It was a surprise move by Heynckes with tough Bundesliga games against RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund to come this month.

Nevertheless, Lewandowski played until the 67th minute but failed to add to his 32 goals this season in all competitions.

Thiago, back after injury, celebrated his first Champions League goal since netting in the 3-0 win at home to Anderlecht last September.

With 18 minutes gone, Bayern captain Thomas Mueller swung in a cross and the Spain international thumped the ball home from close range.

After claiming Bayern’s 100th goal this season, Thiago was forced off on 35 minutes — attacking midfielder James Rodriguez replaced him as the Colombian made his return from a calf injury.

Mats Hummels, who along Jerome Boateng was booked in the first half, was replaced by Niklas Suele at the break before Bayern extended their lead thanks to a Besiktas own goal.

Right-back Rafinha whipped in a cross, but with the Besiktas defence focused on preventing the ball reaching the lurking Lewandowski, Gonul turned the ball into his own net.

Besiktas pulled a goal back on 59 minutes when David Alaba lost possession deep in his own half, allowing Gonul to supply Love who did just enough to roll the ball over the line.

Alaba atoned with a crucial block to deny Besiktas forward Mustafa Pektemek soon after, and the Austrian setup Wagner on 84 minutes as his deflected cross was chested over the line by the substitute.

Onazi Benched As Babel Double For Besiktas Sinks Trabzonspor

By James Agberebi: Ogenyi Onazi’s Trabzonspor’s struggle since the resumption of the second half of the Turkish Super Lig continued on Monday following their 2-0 home defeat to Besiktas.

Since the second phase of the league kicked off in January, Trabzonspor have won just one of their last seven games, losing two and drawing four, including the loss to Besiktas.

Onazi was an unused substitute for Trabzonspor with former Liverpool forward Ryan Babel scoring both Besiktas goals in the 71st and 78th minutes.

Trabzonspor are now seventh on 36 points in the league table while Besiktas are third on 47 points.

Onazi’s side will hope to bounce back from the loss to Besiktas when they visit Akhisarspor for their next league game on Monday.

Ricardo Quaresma nets outside-of-the-boot worldie for Besiktas vs Fenerbahce (Video)

Besiktas winger Ricardo Quaresma has this evening taken to Instagram to post footage of his brilliant strike for the Black

Besiktas winger Ricardo Quaresma has this evening taken to Instagram to post footage of his brilliant strike for the Black Eagles during the club’s crunch clash with Fenerbahce.

Matchup

The pair of Turkish giants went head to head at the Vodafone Arena earlier today, with visitors Fenerbahce coming into proceedings 3 points clear of Besiktas in 3rd-place in the Super Lig standings.

As such, a win for the hosts was imperative in their hopes of retaining their Turkish top-flight crown, with Galatasaray a further 3 points clear atop the Super Lig table and İstanbul Başakşehir just a point further back with a game in hand.

3-1

And, despite Besiktas having no doubt headed into the clash low on confidence following their 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League last-16 during the week, Şenol Güneş’ men did exactly what was required of them this evening, picking up all 3 points in a 3-1 win.

The home side had to come from behind following Fernandão’s early strike for Fener’, with second-half goals from Domagoj Vida and Ricardo Quaresma (2) the difference between the sides.

Worldie

Quaresma’s first strike, in the 77th-minute, was particularly special, and came courtesy of a piece of skill for which the Portuguese wide-man has developed a name down through the years.

After picking the ball up on the right side of Fenerbahce’s box, Quaresma shifted onto his left side, before unleashing a picture-perfect effort with the outside of his right boot past the despairing Carlos Kameni in the visitors’ goal.

And Quaresma, who has never been shy regarding making his talents known, has since taken to Instagram to post footage of his strike, as showcased below:

Besiktas vs Fenerbahce match preview

One of the biggest games in Turkish football takes place on Sunday as Besiktas “welcome” Fenerbahce to the Vodafone Stadyumu.

Istanbul derbies are a sight to behold at the best of times, this one should be no different with plenty at stake.

Besiktas come into this match off the back of a hugely disappointing 5-0 defeat at Bayern Munich.

Their Champions League hopes are all but done and dusted thanks to this result. The early sending off of Domagoj Vida all but sealed Besiktas hopes of doing anything in Munich.

Turning back to domestic action, Besiktas have it all to do as they trail Fenerbahce by three points.

With Fenerbahce in third, just three points behind leaders Galatasaray, this fiery local derby will also have a bearing on the Turkish title race as well.

These sides also meet on Thursday in the Turkish Cup, also with Besiktas at home.

The last time they played: Fenerbahce 2 – Besiktas 1

In late September, Fenerbahce beat Besiktas 2-1 at the Ülker Stadyumu Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Spor Kompleksi.

Giuliano and Vincent Janssen both scored penalties for Fenerbahce. Ryan Babel pulled a goal back for Besiktas with three minutes remaining.

Besides the three goals, this game also featured nine yellow cards and five red cards!

Bayern romp home 5-0 after Besiktas suffer early red card

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich romped to a 5-0 win over Besiktas in their UEFA Champions League tie on Tuesday after the Turkish champions played nearly the whole match with 10 men.

They were helped by two typical Thomas Mueller goals and two from Robert Lewandowski.

Besiktas defender Domagoj Vida was given a straight red card for tripping Lewandowski outside the penalty area in the 16th minute.

That indeed proved to be the defining moment in the round of 16 first leg ties played in Munich.

Mueller, inelegant yet always effective, broke the deadlock with a miskick two minutes before halftime to break Besiktas’s resistance.

Kingsley Coman and Mueller added two more before Lewandowski helped himself to a late brace, virtually assuring the Bavarians of a seventh successive quarter-final appearance.

Besiktas won all three away games in the group stage and came with the clear intention of attacking Bayern but their plans were torpedoed by Vida’s red card.

A poor pass from Atiba Hutchinson went straight to Lewandowski, who burst past Vida and was tripped as he ran at goal with only goalkeeper Fabri to beat.

Besiktas could still have snatched a priceless goal minutes later.

That was when Vagner Love got past two Bayern defenders to give himself a clear shot on goal, but his effort was high and wide.

Bayern then laid siege to Besiktas and Fabri denied them the opening goal with a superb one-handed save at point-blank range to turn away Mats Hummels’s header.

Having survived another scare when Ricardo Quaresma burst down the right and forced Sven Ulreich to save at his near post, Bayern broke the deadlock two minutes before halftime.

Coman got to the byline and crossed, Alaba touched it on and the ball fell to Mueller who turned, failed to make proper contact but poked it home.

It was a typically scrappy effort from a player once described on the German Football Federation’s Twitter feed as having the elegance of a swan on ice skates.

There was an air of inevitability about the second half as Bayern took complete control.

Coman sidefooted in from Lewandowski’s pass in the 53rd minute before Mueller struck again in the 66th, this time sticking his leg out to divert Joshua Kimmich’s cross past Fabri.

Lewandowski got in on the act by snapping up a rebound in the 79th minute, before Mueller set up the Pole’s second and Bayern’s fifth.
