By James Agberebi:
Nigeria forward Olanrewaju Kayode was in action for Shakhtar Donetsk who were crowned Ukrainian league champions after beating visiting Veres Rivne in their penultimate league game of the season on Sunday.

Kayode, who joined Shakhtar on loan from Manchester City in January, was brought on in the 78th minute of the game.

The former Austria Wien star has now added the league title to the Ukrainian Cup which Shakhtar won following their 2-0 final win against Dynamo Kyiv last week.

Shakhtar retained the Ukrainian league title and have now won it 11 times.

In the Belgian Championship play-offs also on Sunday, Super Eagles forward Moses Simon scored the only goal which gave Gent a 1-0 home win against Anderlecht.

Simon scored in the 66th minute to give Gent the win against Anderlecht who had Henry Onyekuru on the bench for 90 minutes. It was his Simon’s sixth goal in 28 league appearances this season for Gent.

Gent are fourth on 11 points in the six-team Championship play-offs and will qualify for the Europa League play-offs if they finish in the position.

Anderlecht are third on 12 points and will qualify for the Europa League automatic spot.

And in the final day in the Scottish Premiership, Nigeria defender Efe Ambrose was in action for Hibernian who played out a thrilling 5-5 home draw against 10-man Rangers in the six-team Championship group clash to decide qualification for Europe.

Ambrose was however replaced with 20 minutes remaining in the game.

The draw means Hibernian finished fourth on 67 points in the final league table (their points from the regular season added to points gained in the Championship group tie), and miss out on qualification to Europa League which was secured by Rangers.

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, conceded three goals while in action for RC Deportivo Fabril in Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Celta Vigo B in the Spanish Segunda B Group 1, reports.

Uzoho who was making his 22nd appearance for the club has now conceded 17 goals, and kept 12 clean sheets for RC Deportivo Fabril.

Efe Ambrose helped his Scottish League side, Hibernian FC record a 2-1 win over Celtic in the Scottish Premier League at Easter Road on Saturday. The defeat delayed Celtic’s title triumph.

The win was the first for the Hibs over Celtic since December 2012, and it was the third time that Brendan Rodgers’ side has lost in the league this season.

Ambrose has made 34 SPL appearances for the Hibs this season.

In Turkey, Shehu Abdulahi made his 12th appearance for Bursaspor in their 4-1 away win at Karabukspor.

The Nigeria international was yellow carded in the 72nd minute of the ill-tempered encounter that saw seven yellow cards and a red card issued.

His compatriots, William Troost Ekong and Mikel Agu were unused substitutes in the encounter. It was the second game in a row that the pair were left out of the starting lineup.

William Troost Ekong has made 25 appearances for the club scoring twice while Mikel Agu has 22 games under his belt scoring twice as well.

Ogenyi Onazi was not included in Trabzonspor’s side that lost 2-0 at home to Sivasspor. Onazi has made 18 league appearances for Trabzonspor this term.

Sammy Ameobi played all 90 minutes for Bolton Wanderers who slumped to a 4-0 defeat at home to English Premier League bound side, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The game was Ameobi’s 33rd of the season. Bolton remains two points clear of the relegation zone, in 21st position, with 40 points from 44 games.

Ola Aina played for 44 minutes before he was replaced by Fikayo Tomori in Hull City’s 5-5 draw with Bristol City. The game was Aina’s 44th appearance this season for Hull in the English Championship.

5 Players Who Deserve Opportunity In Super Eagles Training Camp Ahead 2018 FIFA World Cup

With the 2018 FIFA World Cup inching closer to the big kick off in Russia,’s JAMES AGBEREBI takes a

With the 2018 FIFA World Cup inching closer to the big kick off in Russia,’s JAMES AGBEREBI takes a look at five players who deserve an opportunity to vie for selection by Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr ahead of the team’s trip to Russia.

EFE AMBROSE (Defender)

It is evident that one area which the Super Eagles need to strenghten ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup is in the defence.

One player who has what it takes to add experience and stability in the defence is Efe Ambrose.

Since last featuring for the Super Eagles in a 1-0 away loss to Egypt in the qualifiers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in 2016, Ambrose is yet to get a recall.

But the Hibernian defender can still do a job for the Super Eagles both at the right-back and central defensive positions.

Shehu Abdullahi and Tyronne Ebuehi have featured at right-back while the duo of William Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun seems to have formed a formidable partnership in the middle of the defence, but Ambrose can have a go with these players for both positions.

Ambrose won the 2013 AFCON with the Eagles, was at the 2013 FIFA Confederation Cup and was also at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. This is an indication that he has the experience at the top level.

He has played all 33 league games for his Scottish club Hibernian which means he is a regular and will be super fit if given the chance to be in Rohr’s 23-man squad.

The Super Eagles is blessed with pacy and skillful players who can wreak havoc to any defence on their day.

Players like Victor Moses, Moses Simon, Ahmed Musa, Alex Iwobi all showed how deadly they can be as was evident during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

But one player who can be a valuable addition to the plethora of wingers in the team going to the World Cup is Las Palmas forward Imoh Ezekiel.

Blessed with pace and the ability to take defenders on from the wings, it is a surprise that Ezekiel can only boast of just one cap for the Eagles which was in a 0-0 draw against Mexison in a friendly in 2014.

Despite his lack of opportunity with the Super Eagles, Ezekiel showed what he can do as he was one of the outstanding players for the U-23 Eagles who won bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

His appearance at the 2016 Olympics also shows he has top competition experience which will be a plus for the Super Eagles in Russia if given the opportunity.

Azubuike Okechukwu’s only appearances with any Nigerian national team was with the U-23 Eagles where he excelled in the midfield.

He captained the team to a bronze medal finish at the 2015 All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville and was part of the Rio 2016 Olympic U-23 Eagles squad.

Diminutive in size, Okechukwu has proven that he has the football brain to contribute in the Super Eagles midfield if called upon.

Operating in a deep-lying midfield role, Okechukwu is comfortable on the ball and can link both defence and attack, an area which was brutally exposed during the Eagles’ two friendly against Poland and Serbia.

Also Okechukwu can create scoring opportunities from his deep midfield role, a skill which apart from John Mikel Obi, no other midfielder in the current Super Eagles can produce.

He has played in 21 of Yeni Malatyaspor’s 28 league games in the Turkish top flight.

The only recognised number nine in the Super Eagles going to the 2018 FIFA World Cup is Odion Ighalo.

For a team that is serious about doing very well at the World Cup, relying on just one striker is not good enough.

One player who should be given the chance to show what he can do is Amkar Perm striker Aaron Samuel.

Samuel is no stranger when it comes to the Super Eagles as he has seven caps and two goals to his name.

The 23-year-old is big and strong and can be a good backup for Ighalo who struggled in the Eagles’ friendlies against Poland and Serbia.

After struggling at CSKA, Samuel moved to Amkar Perm in February of 2018 where he seems to have relaunched his career. He has so far scored two goals in four league games.

DELE AJIBOYE (Goalkeeper)

The Plateau United shot stopper is yet to feature for the main Super Eagles team, but his appearances for the home-based side has shown how useful he can be if only Gernot Rohr can put faith on him.

Ajiboye had the opportunity of being in the Super Eagles squad in their 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon in Uyo and Yaounde, and the game against Zambia also in Uyo.

He was second choice to Ikechukwu Ezenwa during the 2017 West Africa Football Union Cup of Nations in Ghana where he kept in a handful of games.

At the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco, Ajiboye also did well when called upon to replace Ezenwa who got injured in their semi-final match against Sudan.

Ajiboye was one of the reasons the home-based Eagles made it to the final as he made daring saves to keep the Sudanese at bay as Nigeria won 1-0.

In the final, though the Eagles were thrashed 4-0 by hosts Morocco, Ajiboye made excellent saves to make sure the Eagles did not lose with a cricket scoreline.

With the uncertainties surrounding some of the goalkeepers currently in the Super Eagles heading to the World Cup, Ajiboye should be given the chance once again to prove his worth.

Ambrose: Hibs Want Second Place Finish In The League

By James Agberebi:

By James Agberebi:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Nigeria defender, Efe Ambrose, says that his club,  Hibernian, want to crown their recent impressive run in the Scottish Premiership with a second place finish and a European qualification ticket.

Currently, the top placed team in the Scottish Premiership gains qualification for the Champions League second qualifying round, while the second and third placed teams enter the Europa League at the first qualifying round stage.

Since losing to Hearts (1-0 FA Cup) and Celtic (1-0 league) both in January, Hibernian have gone eight straight Premiership games unbeaten (six wins, two draws).

They are currently fourth on 58 points in the 12-team league table, four points behind Aberdeen who are second and just one point behind Rangers in third spot.

And ahead of Saturday’s away game against relegation threatened Ross County, Ambrose expresses his firm confidence that Hibernian can achieve their second place target.

“One point behind Rangers and four behind Aberdeen, we are close. We need to let them know we’re coming,” Ambrose tells Edinburgh News.

“Nobody is safe right now – maybe only Celtic. But for the rest, and Kilmarnock are coming really strong too, second is still open and anyone can be in that position.

“But the work we have to do is just starting because we are going to play the best teams in the country although we have done well against the teams in the top six.”

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner with the Super Eagles, admits that being knocked out of the Scottish Cup by arch-rivals Hearts in the first match following the winter break was turning point in Hibs’ season as they were left with no choice but to focus on finishing high in the table.

He says: “Coming back up, our first season in the league, our goal was to be in the top six and win a trophy. When we lost to Hearts we knew we could not win a trophy so from then on we have looked at finishing in the top four and winning a European spot would be a great achievement for the club. Being in Europe is like winning a trophy for us, that’s what the gaffer has said to us.”

ADO Den Haag came from a goal down to beat Excelsior 2-1 in Friday’s Dutch Eredivisie clash.

A second half brace from Maars Johnson cancelled out Milan Massop’s first half goal for hosts Excelsior.

Ambrose: My Experience Can Help Super Eagles At Russia 2018

Hibernian defender, Efe Ambrose, says his experience of playing at the highest level could be key for the Super Eagles

Hibernian defender, Efe Ambrose, says his experience of playing at the highest level could be key for the Super Eagles at the 2018 FIFA World Cup if he makes the squad.

Ambrose has not featured for the Eagles since facing Egypt in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in 2016.

The former Celtic centre-back also represented Nigeria at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and insists he still has plenty to offer if called upon.

“Coming back into the national team would be a great achievement and feeling,” the 2013 AFCON winner told Daily Record.

“To pull on that green-and-white shirt again would be my dream.

“My country gave me the platform to get to where I am today so representing them again would be the best thing that could happen in my career. There is more I can give and more I can achieve. I will never say never.

“I have achieved so many aspirations with my national team, the Olympics, the Under-20s, the Confederations Cup, winning the Nations Cup and playing in the World Cup . I have a lot of good experiences.

“I just want to keep my form going and make sure I am in good shape, that is the most important thing. From there it is up to the gaffer to select me.

“If he sees me playing like I have been and wants to call upon my experience for the World Cup, then why not? That would be my dream, because it has been too long since I was part of the national team.”

By Johnny Edward:

Nigeria forward Alex Iwobi provided an assist in his 16th English Premier League appearance this season for Arsenal who defeated Everton 5-1 at the Emirates on Saturday.

Iheanacho’s last league goal in the English Premier League was on the 26th of December 2016 for Manchester City against Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi made his 25th start for the Foxes during the draw with Swansea and saw his goal chopped off for an offside.

In the English Championship, Super Eagles defender Ola Aina played all 90 minutes for Hull City who lost 2-1 away to Preston North End. The game was Aina’s 27th appearance in the English Championship this season.

Ambrose Wants Hibernian To Improve On Home Record, Challenge Celtic For SPL Title

Nigerian defender, Efe Ambrose, has says Hibernian would been fighting ‘toe-to-toe’ with his former club, Celtic, at the top of the Scottish Premier League (SPL) table, but for their poor home form.

Hibs have won just four of their 11 matches at home this season, a sharp contrast to their results on the road where they have lost only two of their 13 fixtures, the second of those coming against Celtic which they lost 1-0 last weekend.

They face their first home match of 2018 when they play Motherwell on Wednesday night (tonight). after going through a tough schedule of three away games in the space of six days. ‎

And Ambrose states that it is time for Hibs to finally make home advantage count. And to accomplish that, he insists that they must match their performance against Celtic last weekend.

“I think we deserved something out of the Celtic game,” Ambrose told Edinburgh News.

“They are the best side in the country by a mile so we have to take the positives into the Motherwell match. But we know how good they are so we need to perform. As the gaffer says, to win you have to earn it and to do that you have be give your best, particularly at home.

“In the first half of the season, we haven’t pressed home that advantage, if we’d won our home games we’d be toe-to-toe with Celtic.

“I don’t know what is wrong, but we are working hard to make the second half of the season much better than the first.”
