The Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, has expressed confidence that President Muhammadu Buhari will emerge victorious in the 2019 general elections.

The minister made this known on Wednesday while inspecting the dualisation of the Ibadan-Ilorin road in Osun state.

“We are so confident that our re-election would be easy,” he said.

“Whether it is in terms of infrastructure, whether it is in terms of social intervention, every day we are working for the people.”

According to Mohammed, the Buhari administration has kept its promises to the people of Nigeria.

He also believes that the President has not lost his goodwill because of the massive projects he says it is embarking on.

In the area of infrastructure, the minister assured the public that there are enough funds to ensure that the road projects are completed at the appropriate time especially with the disbursement of the Sukuk Bond.

He further stated that the Federal Government would not relent in its promises despite criticism from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Our response to critics is not to exchange banters,” he said.

“There is only one way you can get the electorates to vote for you – by keeping your promises to them and by embarking on projects that touch their lives and this is what we are doing and that is why we are so confident.

Another of such projects which he pointed out is in the area of social intervention.

Mr Mohammed said the Federal Government’s school feeding programme caters to about eight million children across primary schools.

“We are working for the common man in this country. As of today, we feed 8.2 million children in primary schools over Nigeria. In the process, we employ 87,000 cooks.

“This feeding programme in about 24 states covers 62,000 primary schools,” he added.

A Syrian engineer who was abducted last week by unknown gunmen in Sokoto state in northern Nigeria has been released, the police said on Wednesday.

Abdul Nasir was kidnapped on May 16 on his way to a road construction site outside the state capital of Sokoto city by armed men who killed three policemen that tried to rescue him.

“Abdul Nasir was released on Tuesday at about 12:30 am (1130 GMT) by his abductors,” said Sokoto state police spokeswoman Cordelia Nwawe.

“He was dropped off along Arkilla Road on the outskirts of the city”.

Nwawe declined to give further details but said no ransom was paid.

Kidnapping has not been common in Sokoto but cattle rustling and kidnapping gangs operate in neighbouring Zamfara state to the west, which has prompted the deployment of troops.

In March 2011 a British construction engineer and his Italian colleague were kidnapped from their lodgings in Kebbi state, which borders Sokoto to the east.

It later emerged that Boko Haram splinter group Ansaru was behind the abduction.

The hostages were killed in a botched rescue operation involving British and Nigerian forces in a house in Sokoto where they were kept for 10 months.

The Senate is currently holding a closed-door meeting with the Service Chiefs to address the proliferation of dangerous firearms and the spate of killings by terrorists in the country.

They are also expected to discuss the increased rate of kidnappings by hoodlums across the nation.

In attendance is the Chief of Defence Staff Abayomi Olonisakin who led the delegation and the Director General of Department of State Services, Lawal who is also briefing the Senate.

The Senate had last Wednesday invited the Service Chiefs to brief lawmakers on the alarming security situation in the country.

They (Senators) also invited the Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali, to proffer solutions over the proliferation of dangerous firearms in Nigeria.

The lawmakers mandated the Senate Committee on Intelligence and National Security to conduct a thorough investigation, with a view to unravelling the remote and immediate causes of the proliferation of firearms in the country as well as proffer a lasting solution to the problem.

Presenting a motion on the proliferation of dangerous firearms in the country, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, said that sectarian clashes including the herdsmen farmers’ crises are now more devastating due to the wrongful and easy acquisition of firearms.

He added that this ugly trend has contributed to the colossal loss of lives and wanton destruction of property of Nigerians.

This comes after several killings in the country which has been a major concern to Nigerians.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reacted to the claim by President Muhammadu Buhari that a past administration spent more than $15bn on power projects, with no power to show.

President Buhari made the claim on Tuesday while addressing members of the Buhari Support Organisation, who were led by the Comptroller-General of Nigerian Customs Service, Hameed Ali, to visit him at the State House.

“One of the former Heads of State between that time was bragging that he spent more than 15 billion American dollars, on power,” the President said.

“Where is the power? Where is the power? And now we have to pay the debts.”
Although President Muhammadu Buhari did not directly mention the name of the former President he was talking about, the Obasanjo administration has been repeatedly accused of spending up to $16bn on power.

The former President also believe the criticism was targeted at his administration and reacted to it in a statement a few hours after President Buhari’s comments were published.

In the statement signed by Mr Akin Osuntokun, Director of Strategic Communications of the Coalition for Nigeria Movement, which he founded, Obasanjo accused President Buhari of playing politics with statistics.

The statement read in part, “A presidential panel headed by the then VP Goodluck Jonathan set up by the Umaru Yar’Adua government put a lie to this after the same administration had sacked one Engr F. Somolu the then Secretary of NIPP who first drew attention to the lie: that $16 had been spent on power project.

“The Panel made up of so many actors including CBN officials then found out that only $3.7 billion was disbursed out of the $10 billion budgeted and the balance was kept in an escrow account at the CBN.

“The CBN confirmed this to the panel and it was published…It was then found out that Tanimu Yakubu then Economic Adviser to President Yar’Adua began the propaganda against former President Obasanjo and Engr. Somolu then with Yar’Adua wrote a secret memo inside the statehouse to correct the wrong notion about $10 billion.”

Metuh being attended to by medical officers in court on Monday, May 21, 2018.

Barely 24 hours after he collapsed in court, trial of the former Spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Olisa Metuh has continued at the Federal High Court in Abuja in his absence.

At the trial which commenced on Tuesday, counsel to his company, Destra Investment which is also on trial asked the court for an adjournment because Mr Metuh is receiving treatment at the hospital.

But the prosecutor, Mr Sylvania Tahir, in his reply to the application said that it has not been brought to the notice of the court what transpired after the defendant was taken to the hospital, especially because the court did not invite the medical personnel who attended to the defendant.

Mr Tahir said as a result of that Metuh is not entitled to enjoy the benefits of section 266 of ACJA.

According to him, it should not be presumed that the court or the prosecution knows the state of the accused person at the moment there is no medical report before this court explaining the absence of the defendant in this case.

He noted that what is playing out is a complete disregard and disobedience to the authority of the court and the judiciary.
Mr Tahir said that there is no reasonable explanation for the absence of the defendant and so he cannot enjoy the benefits of section 266o of ACJA.

“We are urging the court to invoke the subsection A of the said act to take the conduct of the accused yesterday and continuance today as misconduct and proceed with the trial in his absence”

He said that going on with the trial in the absence of Metuh will not amount to the violation of the right to fair hearing as submitted by counsel to Destra in his submission.

He added that a defendant cannot hold the court to ransom by doing things or taking steps deliberately intended to scuttle or frustrate the fair trial of a case.

The Igbo Socio-Cultural Group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo have called for a review of Nigeria’s democratic structure, demanding regional government and a review of the nation’s constitution.

The group also called for the enthronement of the principles of equity and fairness noting that this will help Nigeria achieve all-round development and solve its political and economic challenges.

These among others were the demands of the Ohanaeze at the Summit held on Monday in Awka, the Anambra State Capital.

Many other suggestions formed the content of the communique of the summit which was read by former CBN Governor, Charles Soludo.

The event also had in attendance representatives of the Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere, the Niger Delta and the north-central.

The President of the Ohaneze, John Nwodo also at the event called for equality in the affairs of Nigeria. He added that he is not the sole convener of the summit.

“It is driven the by majority of our people. The planning and strategic committee is derived from all strata of the Igbo society. All states, all segments and all opinion and thoughts. We went on town all meetings and derived the opinion and views of the majority of our people.

“You can say that we propelled this but it is not just us that did it, it is the people that did it,” he said.

He added that the system has put out a structure that is nepotist and marginalised the Ndigbo people.

“The system is devoid of a balance. The indices are so clear for all to see. We have the lowest number of states among the geo-political region. Even amongst us, we have only 95 local governments which is not up to the sum of two local governments in one of the zones,” he said.

Also in attendance at the event are the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, former APGA Chairman Victor Umeh, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Niger Delta Leader Edwin Clark, among others.

If We Obey God, Our Nation Will Change – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo while addressing the congregation during a special Sunday Service at the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly in Abuja on Sunday, May 20.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has emphasised the importance of obedience to God’s word and instruction noting that they are essential for successful nation-building.

According to him, the church has its role to play in nation building. Creativity, innovation and hard work, according to him are also vital instruments which the church needs to focus on to move the nation forward.

He made this remark during a special Sunday Service at the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly in Abuja.

“It is the church that transforms everywhere. That creativity that God commanded us to do everywhere is what will change our nation. Our creativity, innovation and hard work, and this is a command. So if we obey God, our nation will change.

“There are many countries all over the world with huge resources and many other countries that have no resources. It is creativity that makes the difference,” he said.

Professor Osinbajo also asked the church to continue to emphasise the virtues of hard work and diligence particularly at a time when young Nigerians need guidance on understanding the meaning of true success.

“Sometimes when we hear what is being preached in churches it’s almost as if life is to be lived by miracles and that people don’t really need to put in any work.

“The reality is that true success is line by line, precept by precept, building block upon building block, hard work innovation, character, that’s the measure of true success and somebody has to teach that because that is what the church has always been known for.”
