Crespo: Messi Behind Icardi’s Argentina World Cup Ordeal

Former Argentina striker Hernan Crespo has claimed that Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is behind Jorge Sampaoli’s likely decision not to call Mauro Icardi

Former Argentina striker Hernan Crespo has claimed that Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is behind Jorge Sampaoli’s likely decision not to call Mauro Icardi up for this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Icardi has scored 27 goals in the Italian Serie A this season for Inter Milan but remains behind Serio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala in the pecking order, according to Jorge Sampaoli.

Former Inter and Chelsea striker Crespo, 45, who scored 35 goals in 64 Argentina matches, however believes that leaving Icardi out from the La Albiceleste World Cup squad will be the greatest mistake Sampaoli will be making.

“It seems to me that Icardi is not one of Messi’s friends,” Crespo told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The national team is now made up of a magic circle, do you understand me? Icardi is not part of the circle and therefore, unfortunately, he will not go to the World Cup in Russia.

“This is my opinion. The team needs a striker like him, but Sampaoli and Messi think otherwise.”

Argentine FA Backs Sampaoli To Lead Albiceleste To World Cup Despite Spain Mauling

President of the Argentina Football Association, Claudio Tapia, has backed the much criticised national team head coach Jorge Sampaoli to

President of the Argentina Football Association, Claudio Tapia, has backed the much criticised national team head coach Jorge Sampaoli to lead the team to a respectable outing at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia despite La Albiceleste’s embarrassing 6-1 defeat to Spain in a friendly game last week.

Sampaoli, who was in charge of Chile at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil helped the South Americans secure the ticket to the mundial despite a poor start but the team’s poor performance in recent games have seen come under criticisms from the fans.

Aside from the defeat to Spain, the Albiceleste were embarrassed 4-2 by Nigeria, one of their group opponents in Russia in a friendly game last year.

But Tapia has refused to tow that line of fans and analysts who has called for his sack, and has even hinted that the former Sevilla gaffer will manage the team beyond the World Cup.

“Jorge’s project has a first stage of 5 years and does not depend on the performance of the team at the World Cup,” Tapia told Argentina online news outlet, ole.com.ar.

“It is important to put a lot of things in place to achieve the best result for the national team, but it has to be a long term project.

“On the other hand, there must be a good details of the work to be done to improve the current national team.

“We have to improve our youth system and reevaluate the existing one to discover players who will play for the team in future.

“That will give us the peace of mind that we have a new generation that can take over from the old players. We don’t want to repeat the same mistake in future.

“A lot of things have happened to us that make us think we have to reassess the project and that things have not been done well.”

Argentina Coach Sampaoli Accepts Responsibility For 6-1 Mauling By Spain

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli says he accepts responsibility for the side’s 6-1 hammering at the hands of Spain in Tuesday’s friendly encounter at the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium.

Spain ran riot in the game courtesy of Isco’s hat-trick with Diego Costa, Thiago and Iago Aspas also getting on the scoresheet.

“I take the blame for the goals, don’t point to the players,” he accepted in front of the media after the game.

“The difference [between the sides] in the game wasn’t as large as the result.

“We have to learn from this. It cannot happen in the World Cup.”

Lionel Messi’s absence was keenly felt by the visitors and the Argentina boss paid tribute to the striker’s commitment in spite of his absence.

“Messi trained with us, but then he felt tired and couldn’t play,” added Sampaoli.

“He was with the group all the time because he is very involved for the World Cup.

“He has kept close proximity to the national team, helping the new guys out.”

The defeat equaled Argentina’s heaviest loss in an international game.

Argentina Coach Sampaoli Threatens To Drop Dybala, Icardi From World Cup Squad

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli has hinted that Paulo Dybala may miss out on the 2018 World Cup squad in Russia

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli has hinted that Paulo Dybala may miss out on the 2018 World Cup squad in Russia after the Juventus forwad failed to improve on his national team performances.

Dybala, who was left out of the Argentine pre-World Cup friendlies against Italy and Spain, has failed to replicate his form at club level for the Albiceleste.

The 24-year-old has fired blanks in all 12 games for Argentina since he made his debut in 2015.

Sampaoli revealed during his pre-match conference ahead of Friday’s clash against Italy at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester that the Juventus forward has not replicated his club form for the Albiceleste.

“We thought Paulo was a top player, but so far he has not shown it,” Sampaoli said.

“It will be hard for Dybala to get used to our style.

“We couldn’t improve his performances and we have to evaluate if the current players are better than Paulo or if we’ve to keep working with Paulo to improve his performance.”

Sampaoli added that he is frustrated by Mauro Icardi’s inability to replicate his Inter form with Argentina.

“Icardi’s situation is similar to Dybala’s. The comparison between Icardi’s performances at Inter and with Argentina is not the best,” he added.

Argentina are in the same group as Nigeria at the World Cup, along with Croatia and Iceland.

But his poor relationship with the leaders of the Argentina Football Association, his teammates and coupled with his performance for the Albiceleste may have cost him a place in the squad, according to the report.

The Albiceleste will face Italy at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium on
March 23rd and then take on Spain
four days later at the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium, home of Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United’s Rojo and Everton’s Mori last featured for the two-time world champions in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture against Bolivia on March 29, 2017.

The latter picked up cartilage knee injury in that same game which ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Mori only recently returned to full training with the first team and featured in the Toffees’ U-23s defeat against their Arsenal counterparts early this month but he is yet to make an appearance in the English Premier League this term.

Rojo sustained a knee ligament injury in Manchester United’s Europa League clash against Anderlecht last season which effectively ruled him out Argentina subsequent games in the qualifiers after the Bolivia game.

The versatile centre-back has been limited to seven appearances in the Premier League this season as he has been further plagued by injuries.

According to a report in
m.tycsports.com, Sampaoli has already pencilled down the duo for the games against Italy and Spain.

Sampaoli according to the website will also extend an invitation to Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico for the two matches.

Tagliafico, a former U-20 international, made his senior debut against Brazil in June 2017 and has been capped twice by the Albiceleste.

Argentina will play in Group D with Nigeria, Iceland and Croatia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli is set to give Brighton and Hove Albion defender Ezequiel Schelotto his first call-up

According to TyC Sports, Schelotto, 28, has been capped once by Italy in a friendly against England in 2012 but is eligible for Argentina, the country of his birth.

Under FIFA guidelines and rules, if a player does not represent a country in an official match (official FIFA tournament or World Cup qualifier), the player is still eligible to represent another country (should he hold citizenship).

Sampaoli is looking at Schelotto as an alternative to Gabriel Mercado in the right-back position with West Ham’s Pablo Zabaleta calling it quits with international football.

Schelotto has a chance of making the Argentina squad for next month’s friendly matches against Spain and Italy.

The former Sporting Lisbon player has made 12 Premier League appearances for Brighton since joining them this season.

Argentina are in the same Russia 2018 World Cup group with Nigeria and will take the Super Eagles in their last Group D game on June 26 in Saint Petersburg.
