Chelsea Secures Victory Against Man United In FA Cup Final

Eden Hazard ensured Chelsea’s lackluster season ended on a high note by securing the FA Cup in a 1-0 victory

Eden Hazard ensured Chelsea’s lackluster season ended on a high note by securing the FA Cup in a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the final on Saturday.

Days after raising doubts about his Chelsea future, Hazard netted from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute at Wembley Stadium after being brought down by Phil Jones.

Whether Hazard remains a Chelsea player next season could depend on whether “good players” are signed in the offseason, based on the winger’s pre-match comments.

It looks increasingly unlikely Antonio Conte will be the manager overseeing those transfer deals with the departure of the Italian anticipated after two seasons despite delivering silverware.

The rapid collapse in the English Premier League made Conte’s future look increasingly precarious. After lifting the trophy last season, Chelsea finished 30 points behind newly crowned champion Manchester City to finish fifth last week and out of the Champions League places.

Victory for Conte — his first in a cup final — meant Jose Mourinho finished his second season at United empty handed, paying the price for an insipid first-half display and coming to life only after the break.

United took until the 56th minute to register a shot on target when Marcus Rashford struck at goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who later rushed off his line to block the forward.

United did finish second in the Premier League, the club’s highest finish since Alex Ferguson retired as a champion in 2013.

Marcus Rashford slated following performance for Man United vs Chelsea

Fans viewing the FA Cup final clash between Manchester United and Chelsea have this evening taken to social media to absolutely slate Marcus Rashford.

Matchup

The two sides went head to head at Wembley, in the final fixture of the English football calendar this season.

Both clubs came into proceedings desperate to clinch their first silverware of the campaign, after Manchester City claimed the Carabao Cup back in February, before sauntering to the Premier League title last month.

Teams

In front

The early exchanges at Wembley this evening saw little between the sides, with Chelsea just shading things in terms of chances created.

And it was the Blues who then went on to take the lead with 22 minutes on the clock, when a long ball from Cesc Fabregas was brilliantly latched onto by Eden Hazard, with the Belgian leaving Phil Jones in his wake as he burst through one on one with David De Gea.

From here, Jones made a last-ditch attempt to wrap an outstretched leg around Hazard to get a touch on the ball, but only succeeded in tripping Chelsea’s star man up, resulting in a penalty.

Hazard subsequently stepped up and slotted home the ensuing spot-kick with ease, sending David De Gea the wrong way.

Struggles

This was how things ended at Wembley, with Manchester United having missed the chance to move level with Arsenal as the most successful club in the history of the FA Cup.

And, while none of the Red Devils’ stars exactly looked at their best over the course of the 90 minutes this evening (Alexis Sanchez was hugely disappointing once again), a couple had particularly poor outings, one of whom, Marcus Rashford, has since been absolutely torn into by Manchester United’s fans online:

Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 to lift the FA Cup thanks to Eden Hazard’s penalty at Wembley on Saturday to salvage a disappointing season.

In what is still widely expected to be Chelsea manager Antonio Conte’s final game in charge, the Blues withstood a second-half onslaught from United after Hazard’s 22nd-minute spot-kick to ensure Jose Mourinho’s men end the season trophyless.

On a day where the world’s eyes were on a royal wedding 18 miles west in Windsor, Chelsea reigned on the field to salvage a campaign in which they failed to even qualify for the Champions League after finishing fifth in the Premier League.

And should it prove to be Conte’s last game in charge, the Italian’s bowed out on a high as his decision to start first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for the first time in the FA Cup this season over Willy Caballero was justified by a series of saves from the Belgian to keep United at bay after the break.

United were without top-scorer Romelu Lukaku from the start as the Belgian was only fit enough for a place on the bench against his former club due to an ankle injury.

Lukaku’s presence was missed as Chelsea settled quickest with Hazard particularly lively in the space between the United defence and midfield.

The diminutive Belgian threatened first when he burst past Phil Jones only to see a fiercely-struck low effort parried by the legs of David de Gea.

Hazard’s next break proved decisive as he took advantage of more indecision by Jones to race clear on goal before being chopped down by the England defender as he prepared to shoot.

Chelsea players and Conte argued for a red card rather than yellow, but Jones’s attempt to play the ball saved him from a dismissal.

Hazard dusted himself down to coolly send De Gea the wrong way from the spot for his 18th goal of the season.

– Lack of invention –

United had come from a goal behind to win against Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals and the last time they met Chelsea at Old Trafford in February.

However, the lack of invention that Mourinho’s side have been routinely criticised for throughout the campaign showed in their efforts to get back on terms.

Jones had United’s best chance of the first half but headed wide at the back post as he tried to make amends for his earlier error.

Marcus Rashford also failed to make the most of a rare start as a central striker in Lukaku’s absence.

The England international was unable make a clean contact when tied up by a purposeful Paul Pogba run in the last action of the first 45 minutes.

Courtois wasn’t called into action until just before the hour mark when Rashford stung his palms as United dominated the second half.

The Chelsea ‘keeper then made a brilliant stop low to his left to parry an acrobatic Pogba effort and Alexis Sanchez was denied a ninth goal in as many appearances at Wembley when he was flagged offside after firing the rebound into the roof of the net.

At the other end, De Gea kept United alive by saving from Marcos Alonso and Ashley Young was lucky to avoid conceding a second penalty when Alonso’s cross came off his arm.

Rashford’s biggest and last chance to make himself a hero came 20 minutes from time when Courtois rushed from his goal to make a brilliant save from the forward’s attempted chip.

Mourinho reacted by hooking Rashford and Jesse Lingard for Lukaku and Anthony Martial.

But it was Pogba who had the biggest chance to level when the £89 million midfielder headed wide from a corner eight minutes from time.

Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday as Eden Hazard scored the winner with a first-half penalty.

Here are three things we learned from the Wembley showpiece:

Conte out-wits Mourinho

In what could prove to be his final match as Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte enjoyed a sweet moment of vindication as he won his battle with old rival Jose Mourinho.

Conte had spent much of the season locked in a vitriolic feud with United boss Mourinho and although both claimed to have buried the hatchet this week, there was no doubting the Italian’s desire to beat his nemesis.

READ ALSOChelsea Beat Manchester United To Win FA Cup

Conte played his part in Chelsea’s success, sending them out on the front foot in the first half and then ordering them to soak up United’s pressure after the interval.

It was a risky gambit but one that produced a handsome reward.

Yet Conte is aware his future at Chelsea is precarious after 12 months of tension behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge and their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

“Our job is very difficult. Sometimes you can win but the club decides to sack you anyway,” he said recently.

Conte’s dismissal would not be without precedent — two years ago, United sacked manager Louis van Gaal within hours of winning the FA Cup.

It remains to be seen whether the Italian suffers the same fate after leading Chelsea to their first FA Cup since 2012.

For Mourinho, it was a rare disappointment on the big stage as he was beaten for only the third time in his 15 appearances in cup finals with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and United.

Criticised for adopting a cautious approach in United’s biggest games this season, Mourinho once again paid the price for being too conservative in the first half.

Mourinho had instructed Ander Herrera to stick close to Hazard, but that man-marking role left United out-numbered in midfield — and the Belgian made and scored the winner anyway.

United improved in the second half, but it was too late to stop Mourinho finishing the season empty-handed as Conte celebrated.

United stars fail to shine

Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez cost United over £120 million in total transfer fees, with their combined weekly wages amounting to around £500,000-per-week.

But all that eye-watering investment bought United was the latest in a long list of underwhelming displays from their supposed superstars.

Former Arsenal forward Sanchez had scored eight goals in as many games at Wembley for club and country, but in keeping with his lacklustre start to life with United, he was largely anonymous against Chelsea.

It didn’t help that Pogba once again played for long periods as though engaged in nothing more serious than a Sunday kickabout in the park.

The duo’s lack of cohesion was encapsulated in the second half when Pogba and Sanchez fell over one after the other as the France midfielder’s miscued pass to the Chilean was intercepted to stifle a United break.

Pogba was so out of sorts that he didn’t even hit the target with a late header that could have forced extra-time.

Hazard makes his case

Hazard was the lynchpin of Chelsea’s two Premier League title triumphs over the last four seasons, but, like many of his team-mates, this had been something of a lost year for the Belgium playmaker.

The 27-year-old had sparked talk of a move to Real Madrid this week when he flexed his muscles with Chelsea’s hierarchy, insisting he wanted to see who they sign in the close-season before deciding whether to sign a new contract.

But if that was concerning for Chelsea fans, they could at least take heart from Hazard’s whole-hearted commitment to tormenting United’s over-matched defence.

Phil Jones was brutally exposed when Hazard caught him out of position with a sublime touch in the 22nd minute, accelerating away from the United defender, who responded by conceding a penalty that the unruffled Chelsea star converted with nonchalant ease.

It was only Hazard’s second goal in his last 16 appearances.

But it was his crafty contributions that kept Chelsea in control as the Belgian, who departed to a standing ovation, won the FA Cup for the first time.

Controller

And that was all she wrote in terms of goalscoring on the day, with United, despite holding the vast majority of the possession over the course of the 2nd-half, having struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities, and deservedly fallen to defeat.

Key to Chelsea’s victory this evening were the performances of the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Thibaut Courtois and midfield dynamo N’Golo Kante, with the latter having since been absolutely showered with praise by his side’s fans following the full-time whistle at Wembley:

Jose Mourinho’s side are continuing to struggle in finding a way past the Blues’ defence and the Portuguese manager has been forced to withdraw Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford for Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.

The players are visibly growing frustrated with one-another, with Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez involving themselves in a rather heated exchange, which has supporters talking…

Pogba vs Alexis

The French midfielder was very unhappy with Sanchez for failing to release the ball, leading to Pogba shouting at the Chilean.

The duo then wagered a war of words with one another on the pitch, as the Red Devils’ hopes of winning a record-equalling 13th FA Cup look to be slipping away.

The former Arsenal man, in the final 20 minutes has looked very frustrated and United supporters are bemused as to why the winger has remained on the pitch.

Up in arms

In the immediate wake of their side going behind, Manchester United’s fans made their frustrations very much known, with the Red Devils’ faithful having absolutely torn into not only Phil Jones for his poor defending, but also Jose Mourinho for the Portuguese tactician’s decision to opt for the English stopper over the likes of Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof:

Missing man

Ahead of kick-off this evening, one of the main talking points amongst Chelsea’s fans online was the absence of Andreas Christensen not only from Antonio Conte’s starting XI, but from the club’s squad altogether:

As such, last season’s Premier League champions have since provided an update on the situation, revealing that the back problem which has hampered Christensen for so much of the campaign has flared up once again:

Manchester United, meanwhile, lined up as follows, with David De Gea taking Sergio Romero’s place between the posts due to the latter’s lack of match fitness, following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury over the last couple of months:

Ander Herrera speaks out over Manchester United future

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has today opened up on his future with the club, amid rumours of a possible summer exit.

Gifted technician

Spanish midfielder Herrera arrived at Old Trafford from Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2014 for 36 million Euro, but initially struggled to settle into the rigours of the English game.

However, after being handed a consistent run of appearances over the last couple of seasons, Herrera began to show his true worth to United, eventually capping a brilliant campaign in 2016/17 with the club’s prestigious Matt Busby Player of the Year award.

On the move?

Nevertheless, having managed just 13 starts in the Premier League this season, Herrera has been heavily linked with a summer departure from Old Trafford, with Manchester United rumoured to be eyeing a pair of high-profile midfield additions over the next couple of months.

The likes of Fred, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Marco Verratti, Jorginho and more have all been touted as potential reinforcements to the Red Devils’ ranks in the middle of the park.

‘Unless the club sack me…’

As such, speaking in an interview with The Guardian earlier today, Herrera was questioned on his future at Old Trafford, and whether he could seek an exit this summer in search of more playing time.

However, the Spaniard quickly moved to dismiss rumours of a possible departure, first reaffirming his absolute happiness in Manchester, before confirming that he is ready to ‘fight’ for his place at the club:

‘My future is the FA Cup final. I want to be here next season and unless the club sack me, I will be here in pre-season and fight to keep adding games to my total.’

‘In football, what today is black is white tomorrow. So if you think about what can happen in the summer, maybe the club signs four midfielders and they don’t want me any more.’

‘The only thing I can do is train well today and train well tomorrow. That’s all I can say – and of course if the club wants to talk to me [to extend my contract, which runs out in June 2019] I will listen to them because I am happy here.’
