Crespo: Messi Behind Icardi’s Argentina World Cup Ordeal

Former Argentina striker Hernan Crespo has claimed that Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is behind Jorge Sampaoli’s likely decision not to call Mauro Icardi

Former Argentina striker Hernan Crespo has claimed that Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is behind Jorge Sampaoli’s likely decision not to call Mauro Icardi up for this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Icardi has scored 27 goals in the Italian Serie A this season for Inter Milan but remains behind Serio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala in the pecking order, according to Jorge Sampaoli.

Former Inter and Chelsea striker Crespo, 45, who scored 35 goals in 64 Argentina matches, however believes that leaving Icardi out from the La Albiceleste World Cup squad will be the greatest mistake Sampaoli will be making.

“It seems to me that Icardi is not one of Messi’s friends,” Crespo told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The national team is now made up of a magic circle, do you understand me? Icardi is not part of the circle and therefore, unfortunately, he will not go to the World Cup in Russia.

“This is my opinion. The team needs a striker like him, but Sampaoli and Messi think otherwise.”

Inter’s Icardi Set To Make Argentina’s Provisional World Cup Squad

Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi is reportedly to be included in Argentina’s provisional 35-man list for the 2018 FIFA World

Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi is reportedly to be included in Argentina’s provisional 35-man list for the 2018 FIFA World Cup which will be announced on Monday.

According to mundoalbiceleste, despite reports that Icardi, 25, will not make the final 23-man squad which will go to the World Cup, he is still expected to be named in coach Jorge Sampaoli’s provisional list.

Icardi made his debut for Argentina on October 2013, coming on in the 82nd minute in a 3-2 away loss to Uruguay in the Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifier.

The striker has only made a total of four appearances for Argentina without scoring.

He has netted 28 goals in 32 appearances for Inter Milan in the Seria A this season. He is currently second behind Lazio’s Ciro Immobile (29 league goals) in the top scorers chart.

Argentina are in Group D at this year’s FIFA World Cup alongside Nigeria, Iceland and Croatia.

They will start their Russia 2019 campaign on June 16 against Iceland.

Argentina Coach Sampaoli Threatens To Drop Dybala, Icardi From World Cup Squad

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli has hinted that Paulo Dybala may miss out on the 2018 World Cup squad in Russia

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli has hinted that Paulo Dybala may miss out on the 2018 World Cup squad in Russia after the Juventus forwad failed to improve on his national team performances.

Dybala, who was left out of the Argentine pre-World Cup friendlies against Italy and Spain, has failed to replicate his form at club level for the Albiceleste.

The 24-year-old has fired blanks in all 12 games for Argentina since he made his debut in 2015.

Sampaoli revealed during his pre-match conference ahead of Friday’s clash against Italy at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester that the Juventus forward has not replicated his club form for the Albiceleste.

“We thought Paulo was a top player, but so far he has not shown it,” Sampaoli said.

“It will be hard for Dybala to get used to our style.

“We couldn’t improve his performances and we have to evaluate if the current players are better than Paulo or if we’ve to keep working with Paulo to improve his performance.”

Sampaoli added that he is frustrated by Mauro Icardi’s inability to replicate his Inter form with Argentina.

“Icardi’s situation is similar to Dybala’s. The comparison between Icardi’s performances at Inter and with Argentina is not the best,” he added.

Argentina are in the same group as Nigeria at the World Cup, along with Croatia and Iceland.

Icardi Breaks 100-Goal Mark As Inter Milan Join Top Four

Captain Mauro Icardi scored four goals to break through the 100-goal mark in Serie A as Inter Milan returned to the top four with a 5-0 rout of Sampdoria on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Argentina international, who had been sidelined for a month with an injury, broke the century after scoring his first goals since January.

His four-goal haul included three in 14 minutes against his former club.

Icardi now has 103 goals in Serie A — 93 with Inter and ten with Sampdoria.

“I really wanted to reach 100 goals and then I just kept going,” said Icardi.

“It was a fine performance from the whole team and we got three very important points, which are more important than the goals.”

After holding title-chasing Napoli to a goalless draw, Luciano Spalletti’s side showed they were back in the race for a Champions League spot.

But Lazio could move back into fourth place, the final spot for elite European football next season, when they host Bologna later on Sunday.

“It was very important to get points,” said Icardi.

“We showed a lot of sacrifice and team spirit to get a draw against Napoli, but with this win we can rest over the break and prepare to begin again with the right attitude.”

Ivan Perisic headed in the first after 26 minutes in Genoa before Icardi stole the show, slotting in a penalty for a century of Serie A goals after half an hour.

Just a minute later he grabbed a second with a back-heel kick which caught Sampdoria goalkeeper Viviano off guard and added a third just before half-time.

The fourth goal came after the restart, bouncing off the ground to fly over a helpless Viviano.

Despite missing four games through injury this season, he has scored 22 goals in the Italian league.

Sampdoria — who were beaten 4-1 by Crotone last week — are in seventh place just outside the European places.

Napoli meanwhile will bid to close the gap on leaders Juventus later Sunday when they host Genoa.

The champions’ march towards a seventh consecutive Serie A championship was stalled on Saturday by a goalless draw at struggling SPAL that kept the suspense alive.

Sampaoli Set To Drop Red-Hot Icardi From Argentina World Cup Squad

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli will drop Mauro Icardi from his Russia 2018 World Cup squad, according to a report on

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli will drop Mauro Icardi from his Russia 2018 World Cup squad, according to a report on Fox Sports Argentina.

Icardi has been in a rich vein of form for his Italian club Inter Milan in the Serie A, scoring 18 goals in 22 league games.

But his poor relationship with the leaders of the Argentina Football Association, his teammates and coupled with his performance for the Albiceleste may have cost him a place in the squad, according to the report.

In November 2017, the former Sampdoria striker pulled out of Argentina’s international friendly against Nigeria in Krasnodar.

The 25-year-old has made four appearances for the senior national team of Argentina and is yet to score a goal.

Argentina will face Croatia, Iceland and Nigeria in Group D at the World Cup in Russia.

Real Madrid & Man United? Wanda Nara confirms two big clubs want Mauro Icardi

Mauro Icardi & Inter Milan

2018 has so far been a general disaster for Inter Milan.

Having once seemed capable of winning Serie A, Inter have once again imploded.

Many now doubt whether Inter will hold onto a top four finish to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

And, at the same time, rumours have been getting louder in recent weeks that Mauro Icardi could leave Inter this summer.

Icardi has never played in the Champions League. While the Argentine is under contract with Inter until 2021, will he force an exit from the San Siro soon?

Real Madrid & Man United?

When is comes to thinking about where Icardi may be headed, two clubs are at the top of the list.

One of the stories which has been floating about for months is that Real Madrid could sign Icardi.

Most believe that the BBC’s time at the Santiago Bernabeu is coming to an end.

Could Icardi be the striker who could shake things up in Madrid next season?

Alternatively, others are predicting that Man United could swoop for the forward this summer.

And those rumours have increase amid reports that Mino Raiola is trying to sign Icardi up as a client.

Raiola has done a lot of business with Man United in recent seasons. The former pizza boy has Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mhkitaryan on his books.

Wanda Nara on Mauro Icardi

For the moment, however, Icardi’s business is handled by his wife: Wanda Nara.

She acts as her husband’s agent, and she’s now sat down with Corriere dello Sport to discuss her partner’s next moves.

Wanda Nara on Mauro Icardi

She revealed that two clubs want to sign Icardi, as does Mino Raiola, but she’s not letting him go:

In the last period, a couple of important teams have revealed that they want Mauro (Icardi). I’m taking care of his future, I have to listen to them, evaluate the offers and the situation. Names? No names.

I have been dealing with Mauro’s contracts for over three years and we have already signed two renewals with Inter. He is happy with how I work and has never thought about changing representation.

Mauro is a top player who continues to grow season after season. Many agents see him as a possible client, so they try to approach him. But he is calm and will continue with me: his representation will remain in the family.

I have great respect for (Mino) Raiola and for many other colleagues who would like to work with Mauro. (But let me clarify…) I am the only one dealing with contracts and the future of Icardi. Everything passes by me. It’s been like this for over three years and it will be like that also in the future.

Mauro Icardi & Inter Milan

One of the big stories in the Italian press on Wednesday concerns the next career move for Argentine striker Mauro Icardi.

Icardi has been in sublime form for Inter this season. He’s the second top scorer in Serie A with 18 goals from 24 games.

Yet Icardi may feel let down by some of his team mates.

After Inter looked capable of winning the Scudetto in the first half of the season, the San Siro giants have imploded once again.

A club who constantly seem one match away from total crisis, Inter are now battling to stay in the top four in Italy this season.

Icardi is under contract with Inter until 2021, however there’s constant speculation that the Argentine could force a move this summer.

Off to Real Madrid?

One of the stories which has been floating about for months is that Real Madrid could sign Icardi.

Most believe that the BBC’s time at the Santiago Bernabeu is coming to an end.

Could Icardi – a player who has never played in the Champions League – be the striker who could shake things up in Madrid next season?

Mino Raiola & Man United

According to Corriere dello Sport on Wednesday, however, Man United could sign Icardi this summer.

That’s if super-agent Mino Raiola has his way.

Of course, Raiola has done a lot of business with Man United in recent seasons. The former pizza boy has Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mhkitaryan on his books.

But can Raiola add Icardi? That’s doubtful.

The Argentine is represented by his wife Wanda Nara. It seems hugely unlikely that Raiola will be able to prise Icardi away from his partner, which has forced Raiola into trying to position himself as an ‘intermediary’ to complete the Man United deal.

Icardi in talks with Inter

Yet, while Man United are in the running for Icardi, the general belief in the Italian press today is that Inter Milan may lock the striker down to a new deal.

That will involve Icardi receiving a pay-hike plus new bonuses.
