Nigeria forward Olanrewaju Kayode was in action for Shakhtar Donetsk who were crowned Ukrainian league champions after beating visiting Veres Rivne in their penultimate league game of the season on Sunday.

Kayode, who joined Shakhtar on loan from Manchester City in January, was brought on in the 78th minute of the game.

The former Austria Wien star has now added the league title to the Ukrainian Cup which Shakhtar won following their 2-0 final win against Dynamo Kyiv last week.

Shakhtar retained the Ukrainian league title and have now won it 11 times.

In the Belgian Championship play-offs also on Sunday, Super Eagles forward Moses Simon scored the only goal which gave Gent a 1-0 home win against Anderlecht.

Simon scored in the 66th minute to give Gent the win against Anderlecht who had Henry Onyekuru on the bench for 90 minutes. It was his Simon’s sixth goal in 28 league appearances this season for Gent.

Gent are fourth on 11 points in the six-team Championship play-offs and will qualify for the Europa League play-offs if they finish in the position.

Anderlecht are third on 12 points and will qualify for the Europa League automatic spot.

And in the final day in the Scottish Premiership, Nigeria defender Efe Ambrose was in action for Hibernian who played out a thrilling 5-5 home draw against 10-man Rangers in the six-team Championship group clash to decide qualification for Europe.

Ambrose was however replaced with 20 minutes remaining in the game.

The draw means Hibernian finished fourth on 67 points in the final league table (their points from the regular season added to points gained in the Championship group tie), and miss out on qualification to Europa League which was secured by Rangers.

By Johnny Edward:                          Belgian club, KAA Gent have named Nigerian trio of Moses Simon, Anderson Esiti and Samuel Kalu in their match day squad to face Charleroi in Friday’s Belgian Pro League play-offs 1 clash, reportsCompletesportsnigeria.com.

The trio were included in a 22 man squad list, according to Gent’s official Twitter handle.

Gent currently occupy fourth position (Europa League qualification play-off spot) in the Belgian Pro League play-offs 1 table and must avoid defeat against sixth placed Charleroi to stand a chance of qualifying for an European competition.

Simon has made 29 appearances this season and has scored five goals for Gent while Kalu has six goals and seven assists in 34 games for the Buffaloes.

Esiti on his part has made 19 appearances.

Nigerian trio Moses Simon, Anderson Esiti and Samuel Kalu were all in action for Gent who kicked off their Belgian Championship play-offs campaign with a 2-0 away win against Anderlecht on Sunday.

The winner of the play-offs will be crowned league champions and gain qualification to next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Second-half goals from Brecht Dejaegere and Yuya Kubo in the 47th and 86th minutes secured Gent all three points.

Simon was replaced in the 72nd minute while Esiti and Kalu played 90 minutes.

Gent have gone top of the six-team play-off table on three points, usurping Uche Agbo’s Standard Liege who pipped Sporting Charleroi 1-0 on Saturday.

The other two teams in the play-offs are Club Brugge and Genk who will meet on Monday.

In the Spanish LaLiga Santander, Super Eagles forward Isaac Success featured for relegation threatened Malaga who beat visiting Villareal 1-0.

Success was replaced in the 66th minute while his Nigerian teammate Brown Ideye was not in Malaga’s matchday squad for the game.

Gonzalo Castro was the hero as he scored a 37th minute penalty to give Malaga their first league win since December when they beat Real Sociedad 2-0 away.

Before the game against Villareal, Malaga had gone 13 straight league games without a win (10 defeats, three draws).

Malaga remain bottom on 17 points in the league table.

And in the German Bundesliga, Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun was benched for Mainz who were held to a 0-0 home draw by Monchengladbach.

Anthony Ujah was introduced for Mainz in the 90th minute of the game.

The draw means Mainz are winless in their last five league games (three draws, two defeats), are 16th in the relegation play-offs spot on 26 points.

Super Eagles winger Moses Simon is delighted to be back in the national team after missing their last two games, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The 22-year-old Simon missed Nigeria’s final 2018 World Cup group game against Algeria at the Stade Mohamed Hamlaoui, in Constantine which ended in a 1-1 draw and the 4-2 win over Argentina in Krassnodar.

But he is one of the eight forwards invited by coach Gernot Rohr for the two friendlies against Poland and Serbia in Wroclaw and London respectively on the 23rd of March and 27.

“Happy to be with the team,” the Gent winger wrote beneath a picture he tweeted on his handle shortly after his arrival in camp on Tuesday.

His arrival swells the number of Super Eagles players in camp to 14. More players are being expected later today.

Moses has made 22 appearances and scored six times for Gent in all competitions this season.

Moses, a regular starter for the Super Eagles, missed the team’s last two games against Algeria in a 2018 World Cup qualifier and Argentina in an international friendly in Krasnodar but says he’s ready to battle for his place again.

“I missed the last two games and I can’t wait to join them in Wroclaw,”Simon told CSN.

“We will try to work as a team as usual to put smiles on the faces of Nigerians.

“The games (against Poland and Serbia) are going to be tough and it will put us in good shape and I’m ready to fight for my place.

The 22-year old also added that Gent must be clinical and tactically alert if they are to dethrone Anderlecht to win the Belgian League title this season after they qualified for the play-offs 1.

Moses bounced back to full fitness since a knee injury kept him out of action for eight weeks and told CSN winning the league will make up for their tough campaign this season.

Gent, the 2014/15 Belgian league Champions finished fourth after defeating Genk 2-1 on the final day of the Belgian regular season.

“It’s going to be tough but to win the league we must take our chances and ensure we stay compact in defending.”

Gent will compete alongside Anderlecht, Club Brugge, Standard Liège, Genk and Sporting Charleroi in the Belgian Jupiler League play-offs.

By Johnny Edward: Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun was sent off for the first time in the German Bundesliga on Saturday in Mainz’s 0-0 draw against Hamburg, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Balogun was first cautioned in the 34th minute for a foul before receiving his marching orders when he conceded a penalty in the 60th minute. Luckily for Balogun goalker Florian Müller saved the penalty on his debut.

The 29-year-old Nigeria centre-back fouled Luca Waldschmidt in the box and was sent off with his second yellow card for the challenge.

It is his second career red card. His first was in the colours of Fortuna Düsseldorf II in their 2-2 draw against RW Oberhausen in German third division clash in 2012.

Balogun’s compatriot Anthony Ujah made a cameo appearance in the draw, coming on for Yoshinori Muto in the 88th minute.

Mainz remains in the relegation play-off places, level on points with Wolfsburg.

Nigerian youngster Victor Osimhen was not listed in the matchday squad for Wolfsburg who lost 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen in another Bundesliga clash on Saturday.

In the English Premier League, Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi made his 29th English Premier League start for Leicester City whose winless streak extended to five games after they played out a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.

Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho extended his goal drought in the English Premier League to 14 games on Saturday, firing blanks when he came on for Adrien Silva on the hour mark.

The Foxes remain without a league win since mid-January, but a draw kept them in eighth place.

In Spain, Brown Ideye came on for Alberto Bueno in the 60th minute for Malaga who suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Leganes. It was his the Nigeria striker’s seventh game of the season.
His compatriot Isaac Success was not included in the match day squad.

Kingsley Madu played for 16 minutes in Zulte-Waregem 3-2 defeat to Anderlecht. He was replaced by Fredrik Oldrup Jensen in his third appearance of the season.

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off in the 75th minute of Royal Excel Mouscron’s 2-1 home defeat to Lokeren.

Awoniyi has found the back of the net seven times and provided five assists in 26 Belgian Jupiler league games this season.

In Scotland, Chidebere Nwakali came on for Ryan Christie in Aberdeen’s 1-1 draw at home to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup.

Both teams will need a replay at Rugby Park to decide who advances to the next round.

In Turkey, Kenneth Omeruo made his 21st league appearance for Kasimpasa who were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Osmanlispor FK who left out Raheem Lawal and Aminu Umar from their match day squad.

By James Agberebi: Nigerian forward, Samuel Kalu, scored and provided an assist as he ended his goal drought in KAA Gent’s 2-0 home win against Belgian league leaders Club Brugge in a top flight clash on Sunday.

Kalu last scored for Gent in all competitions this season in a 3-0 league win away to Lokeren last November.

Sunday’s goal was Kalu’s fifth in 20 league appearances for Gent so far this season.

Franko Andrijasevic opened the scoring for Gent in the 65th minute off a pass from the Nigerian foward

And with 12 minutes remaining, Kalu scored what was the winner for Gent who have now won two of their last three league games (one draw).

He was later replaced in the 90th minute for Gent.

His Nigerian teammates, Moses Simon and Anderson Esiti, were not included in Gent’s matchday squad.

The win against Club Brugge took Gent to fourth on 39 points in the 16-club league table.
