The official poster for the documentary Whitney has just been released and it features a never-before-seen photo of the late iconic entertainer, Whitney Houston.

To create the teaser poster art, Roadside Attractions and Miramax approached acclaimed photographer and director Randee St Nicholas who had over the years, collaborated with the star many times and opened up her archives to the studios.

Speaking on working with Whitney, Randee said

I’ve been quite fortunate throughout my career to have photographed and directed music videos for some of the most talented artists of our time. Among them was the extremely charismatic and enchanting beauty Whitney Houston. I began photographing Whitney during the filming of ‘The Bodyguard,’ and photographed her for the very last time for the film ‘Sparkle.’ During all of the years in-between, we shared many creative adventures for various projects she was working on.

The documentary was directed by Kevin Macdonald and it unravels the mystery behind “The Voice,” who thrilled millions even as she struggled to make peace with her own troubled past.

Hollywood actress Danai Gurira stuns on the cover of Ebony Magazine‘s June 2018 issue as she talks her goals as an actress, what motivates her, Black Panther and more.

Read excerpts below:

On her goals as an actress: I definitely want to get more African stories on the screen—big and small—[it’s] very important to me. That is definitely something that is on my heart to see through. I have to see it through. That’s a big thing right in front of me that I feel very called to complete and to get into the full process of, which I am now in.

On the response to Black Panther: I think one of the most important things about Panther, one of the most beautiful things about what I witnessed and the response that I received was that there was a lot of beauty in the way it resonated across the world. But I think one of the things that’s been really important to me is that there’s been a reclamation—like a reclaiming that people are doing [things]; of who they are and what they’re doing and what their roots are. It’s a celebration and an understanding that our roots deserve respect. Hopefully, that compels and inspires the great artistic minds that we have in the African diaspora—that it inspires them to know that there are stories they must tell. When we can do that, we are going to have so much more of a beautiful landscape of our own representation. That, to me, is exciting.”

On what motivates her: I think of the little girl in Liberia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe or the Congo who will never have the opportunity I’m standing in. She looks just like me, but she’ll never stand in these shoes. It’s not right. The least I can do is do my best for her. So that, that motivates me. That gets me out of my own way when I remember it’s not about me.

Hollywood star Issa Rae, for her feature in GQ Magazine, stars as ’90s black sitcom characters as she discusses her rise and life as the show runner and star of Insecure.

In the photos. the comedic actress is seen portraying Steve Urkel from Family Matters, Moesha from Moesha, Will Smith from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Dwayne Wayne from A Different World.

Read excerpts from her feature below:

On how her genuine discomfort with being the center of attention: I do feel like people expect me to be entertaining. And I’m not. I’m not an entertaining person. I don’t put on for anybody. I think about someone like Tiffany Haddish, who’s just naturally entertaining, who always has a story. And that’s just not my lane. I’m always gonna be the shy one. I only want to make my presence felt when I feel like it’s necessary. And so much of that is such a hard balance, especially when the narrative is about getting noticed and getting attention for a specific product. And in that way, yeah, I want the eyes to be on what the product is…But after a while, you become the product.

On starring in Insecure and An Awkward Black Girl: I can take it or leave it, to be honest. I had another friend of mine in mind, and then she couldn’t do it. So I was like, ‘I’m running out of time. I’m just gonna do it myself.

On the inspiration behind creating Isecure: The takeaway was ‘Agh, black people are so dope. Where are they at on TV right now? Now I want my own version.

On the makeup of her audience: I think what most surprised me was that the audience wasn’t 90 percent black. I think only 30 to 40 percent of the audience are black people. But I’m like, okay, HBO isn’t accessible to everyone. Like, I didn’t have HBO. I used my friend’s password until the show got picked up.

It’s from the White House to movie making for the Obamas!

Netflix on Monday announced that it has signed a deal with Barack and Michelle Obama to produce TV shows and films for the streaming service.

It had previously been reported that the deal was in the works, although it was never confirmed until now.

Netflix, in their statement, wrote:

President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have entered into a multi-year agreement to produce films and series for Netflix, potentially including scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries, and features.

The New York Times reports that Obama has told associates he has no intention to use the new platform to campaign against his successor in the White House.

Speaking about the deal, Barack said:

One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience.

That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix — we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.

Michelle also had a few words, saying:

Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others.

Netflix’s unparalleled service is a natural fit for the kinds of stories we want to share, and we look forward to starting this exciting new partnership.

The Obamas have created a production company, “Higher Ground Productions,” to produce content for the streaming giant.

Netflix’s Chief Content Manager, Ted Sarandos, has said the company is incredibly proud the “highly-recognised public figures” chose Netflix as their home. He said:

Barack and Michelle Obama are among the world’s most respected and highly-recognized public figures and are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better.

We are incredibly proud they have chosen to make Netflix the home for their formidable storytelling abilities.
