The Alexander Review: Some of the best records right now

Some of the status quo as regards recording are not followed – mixing, mastering and augmentation. This is because artistes are in a hurry to release materials. Can we face the fact that most Nigerian projects lack the Sucre of a Sound engineer and so when a music critic hear these sounds, they trash it right into the bin.  Here are my opinions for the week, track-by-track:

LabalabaTiwa Savage

While Tiwa’s tracks are never short on impact, she just set a new standard on this one – the feel of the vocals, the strong bassline and heavy drums, were all the pieces to a smash.

Rating: 4/5

Magun (Remix)Niniola featuring Busiswa

Catchy, a different arrangement from the main set, this remix pushed boundary from Busiswa’s funk and uncalm side. The additional chords on the surface of the instrumentals made it a bit weak, though.

Rating: 4/5

In the EndDJ Caise featuring Xerona

Do you know what happens when a DJ jumps on a pop song? You get all the elements in the track. Oh yes! Mad percussions included. Xerona’s sultry vocals are welcoming. Yes, Mama. Bring it on! Let us drown.

Rating: 4/5

HalimaDJ Jimmy Jatt featuring Mr Eazi and Skales

Uncle Jimmy with the pon pon! This sound like a Mr Eazi hit. Skales is a passenger on this one – Total waste of a verse.

Ratiung: 3.5/5

My DearDJ Big N featuring Don Jazzy and Kiss Daniel

The tune is nice as it is a highlife tune. Whoever threw autotunes on Kiss Daniel’s verse did not do well. I see a banger here.

Rating: 4/5

DebeD’Tunes featuring Mayorkun and Hyperdandy

I love the pattern of the bridges Mayorkun and Hyperdandy jumped on, consciously protecting the booming instrumentals. This is really impressive.

Rating: 4/5

BANSTerry Tha Rapman featuring Paul Play Dairo

Terry infused a dance inspiration a Hip/Hop classic. The result was really good.

Rating: 3.5/5

Beodun’s unique vocals did a great job on this addictive instrumental – switching keyboar,  Boom-bam drum pattern, keeps everything in balance. Wonderful!

Rating: 4/5

SammahIkechukwu

This tune is on a way to a post-pop classic, but even better is the innocence; with an acid bassline. Absolutely essential in this party tune.

Rating: 3.5/5

I cannot make out the message and feelings of Ezi, but you can hear the soothing vocals; she is not losing that. The song boasts of two keys and minimal instrumentals – your usual Rnb/soul song.

Rating: 3.5/5

Your pop has wavy instrumentals and since it’s the duo Skuki, it has irregular vocals doing damage on a supposedly ‘potential’ hit. Awful!

Rating: 2.5/5

Bam BamCrowd Kontroller featuring Niniola

There is nothing much here just Niniola spraying graffiti paint and helping Kontroller with his job. Sigh!

Rating: 3/5

…………………………………………………

While the hipsters and popstars are all about the Nigerian community of fans inspiring party and club vibes, it’s refreshing to hear a combo from artistes who don’t shy away from traditional styles – Niniola just set a new standard

The last editions of the biggest dance club experience in Nigeria –the #AtTheClubWithRemyMartin Extravaganza party was a success, to say the least. With these editions held in Lagos and Abuja, Rémy Martin continued to raise the bar for out-of-club partying in Nigeria.

From the brilliant costumes to the celebrity impersonations, to the impeccable choreography and the biggest artistes performing; Rémy Martin pulled all the stops in fulfilling all promises in ensuring that the event was beyond guests’ imagination.

Hosts Zainab Balogun and VJ Adams made sure to interact with the crowd and get a more in-depth feel of the guest’s excitement and anticipation prior to the journey.

Teleportation began at 11pm with an impressive re-enactment of iconic movies ‘300’, ‘Iron Man’, “Fast and Furious’, ‘Game of Thrones’ and classic songs like Michael Jackson – Way you make feel, AC/DC – Highway to hell, ‘Janet Jackson – Black Cat’, ‘Bruno Mars – Finesse ft. Cardi B’. Asides the flame eaters, Stilt walkers, Captain Jack Sparrow & Wonder woman impersonators; the re-enactment of ‘The Black Panther’ was perhaps the highlight of the night leaving guests erupting in squeals, catcalls, applauses and shouts as T’challa broke into a shaku shaku rendition with his squad following suit.

Not forgetting the powerful and electric performances by DMW’s Mayorkun, Kiss Daniel, Mr. Eazi, rave of the moment Mr. Real and Mavin’s first lady Tiwa Savage. Keeping the crowd hyped and dancing to the thrilling sets of DJ Neptune, DJ Baggio and Shody the Turn-up King.

Rearranging The Headies Nominations: These Are the Actual Headies 2018 Nominees

Organizers of the Headies Award; the supposed Nigerian foremost award that is saddled with the responsibility of celebrating hard work and musical skill have finally announced the long-awaited nominees for the 2018 edition of the award and boy is it flawed!

There aren’t so many prominent music awards in the country and it is quite disheartening that the “inconsistently prominent” ones have failed to keep to their promise of recognizing actual and ‘very-obvious’ talent. Mediocrity has been highly upheld in the Nigerian music industry and it is safe for one to say that award shows have contributed largely to this menace.

Why Mr Eazi, Ric Hassani and Ajebutter 22 were snubbed in the Album Of The Year and R&B/Pop Album categories where Wizkid’s “Sounds From the Other Side” sat gracefully leaves one far more than puzzled.

READ: Mr Eazi Is Pushing A New Dance Routine “AKWAABA”, And It Has Gone Global | What We Know About The Dance

Mr Eazi’s Accra To Lagos tape was a breath of fresh air and a break to speedy grooves armed with an infectious laid-back vibe and catchy-easy hooks that makes (almost) every song on the project a sing-along. This was indeed the project that shaped the Nigerian pop sphere in 2017. Accra To Lagos served up the blueprint for the infamous ‘pon-pop’ sound.

With top-notch storytelling, respectable delivery, par production and a somewhat surprising flexibility, Ric Hassani also double-cleared everyone’s doubt with his debut “African Gentleman” album and provided a project that ticked every logical musical box there is. Not to forget Ajebutter 22’s conceptual “What Happens In Lagos” album which aptly chronicled life in the ever-busy city.

As a result of the numerous flaws in this year’s nominations, we have decided to do the Headies a favour by rearranging the nominees. These are the actual nominees in select categories for the 2017 Headies Award.
