Manchester United great Paul Scholes has warned Alexis Sanchez he must improve following his lacklustre display in Saturday’s FA Cup final defeat by Chelsea, saying his performances “can’t get any worse”.

Former United midfielder Scholes singled out Chile international Sanchez for criticism after a match United lost 1-0 at Wembley, with Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

United may have finished second in the Premier League table but that still left them a huge 19 points behind champions and local rivals Manchester City.

And Scholes, a key member of Alex Ferguson’s trophy-winning teams at Old Trafford, said the likes of former Arsenal favourite Sanchez had to raise their game if United were to close the gap to City next season.

“His performances, well they have to improve,” Scholes told BT Sport. “They can’t get any worse to be honest with you.

“I think the next few games of next season are vital to him, he needs to get fans believing again and believing they are going to get close to City. They need a big player.

“Paul Pogba does not win you games on his own. Hazard does. Alexis Sanchez doesn’t, he’s shown that since January, they thought he could, but what we’ve seen…

“They need two magical players. I think they’ve got really good players, they haven’t got a Hazard, (Cristiano) Ronaldo, (Lionel) Messi, and I know many teams haven’t, but the difference between the two was the quality in Hazard, we saw that in big games. United don’t have that.”

Arsenal’s supporters really enjoyed Alexis Sanchez’s FA Cup final loss

Fans of Arsenal have this evening taken to Twitter in their droves to poke fun at Alexis Sanchez, after Manchester

Fans of Arsenal have this evening taken to Twitter in their droves to poke fun at Alexis Sanchez, after Manchester United fell to FA Cup final defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

Matchup

The two sides went head to head at Wembley, in the final fixture of the English football calendar this season.

Both clubs came into proceedings desperate to clinch their first silverware of the campaign, after Manchester City claimed the Carabao Cup back in February, before sauntering to the Premier League title last month.

Teams

In front

The early exchanges at Wembley this evening saw little between the sides, with Chelsea just shading things in terms of chances created.

And it was the Blues who then went on to take the lead with 22 minutes on the clock, when a long ball from Cesc Fabregas was brilliantly latched onto by Eden Hazard, with the Belgian leaving Phil Jones in his wake as he burst through one on one with David De Gea.

From here, Jones made a last-ditch attempt to wrap an outstretched leg around Hazard to get a touch on the ball, but only succeeded in tripping Chelsea’s star man up, resulting in a penalty.

Hazard subsequently stepped up and slotted home the ensuing spot-kick with ease, sending David De Gea the wrong way.

Controller

And that was all she wrote in terms of goalscoring on the day, with United, despite holding the vast majority of the possession over the course of the 2nd-half, having struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities, and deservedly fallen to defeat.

One set of fans who extracted particular enjoyment from the struggles and eventual loss of the Red Devils this evening were the Arsenal faithful, who have taken to social media in absolute numbers since the full-time whistle at Wembley to poke fun at former Gunners’ star Alexis Sanchez, after the Chilean forced through a move to Old Trafford in January:

Tottenham Hotspur have this afternoon confirmed that defender Davinson Sanchez has put pen to paper on a new deal with the club.

Dominant stopper

Sanchez, a 21-year-old Colombian international, only arrived in North London last summer from Dutch giants Ajax, for a rumoured fee of £42 million.

Despite his tender years and lack of experience at the top level, though, Sanchez has since gone on to establish himself as an absolute mainstay in the backline of Mauricio Pochettino, doing a splendid job of filling the void left by injured and out-of-favour contract rebel Toby Alderweireld.

Sanchez started in 29 of Tottenham’s 38 Premier League fixtures, as well as all 8 of their outings in the Champions League, and looks set to be a pillar in the club’s defence for years to come.

Staying put

And, as per the aforementioned announcement from Spurs this afternoon, despite having only made the move to the Premier League 9 months ago, Sanchez has already been rewarded for his showings in North London with a new long-term contract, set to keep the powerful stopper tied down until the summer of 2024:

Mkhitaryan: ‘I wasn’t part of Arsenal-Man United deal for Alexis Sanchez’

Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has today revealed that his arrival at the club from Manchester United in January was not

Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has today revealed that his arrival at the club from Manchester United in January was not directly linked to Alexis Sanchez’s move in the other direction.

Done deal

In the biggest saga of the winter transfer window, Alexis Sanchez actively sought out a departure from the Emirates, with his contract having been set to expire this summer.

The likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Manchester City were all touted as potential destinations, with the latter of these sides having been widely expected to secure a deal for the Chilean.

However, just days after a move to the Etihad for Sanchez looked, for all intents and purposes, as complete, Manchester United blitzed their inner-city rivals with a superior contract offer, eventually resulting in Sanchez opting to make the move to Old Trafford.

‘Not true’

The deal’s completion also saw Red Devils’ playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan move in the other direction, an aspect which many viewed as having played a crucial role in Arsenal being convinced to allow another top player to move to Old Trafford.

However, speaking in an interview with FourFourTwo earlier today, Mkhitaryan vehemently denied that he was used as a makeweight as part of the deal for Sanchez, insisting that his transfer to North London was as much down to his own requests as those of Sanchez:

‘I didn’t come here to replace anyone.’

‘Everyone keeps saying that I’ve been part of a deal for Alexis Sanchez but it’s not true because he was running down his contract.’

‘If he didn’t choose to come to Manchester United, he would have stayed at Arsenal until the summer.’

‘Everything was up to me. I’m not saying I was important in this aspect but I want everyone to understand I wasn’t made part of the deal for Alexis Sanchez.’

‘We’re different players, we’re different characters, we have different abilities and skills.’

‘When I heard I could swap Manchester United for Arsenal, I said ‘yes I want to do that.’

‘I wasn’t evening thinking twice or thinking that maybe I don’t have to go. I said ‘no I want to go. I want to have more playing time. I want to enjoy playing attacking, offensive football’. I made the right decision coming here.’

Supporters of Arsenal have taken to Twitter in their numbers this evening to sing the praises of Granit Xhaka, after the Swiss midfielder’s ‘questionable’ early challenge on Alexis Sanchez.

Matchup

Manchester United and Arsenal are currently locked in action at Old Trafford, in Arsene Wenger’s final appearance at the home of the Red Devils as Arsenal manager.

There was a touching moment ahead of kick-off, when Sir Alex Ferguson surprised Wenger with an award of excellence for his services over the last 22 years, with Jose Mourinho having also embraced the soon-to-be former Gunners’ boss on the sideline before the start of the match.

Teams

Challenge

The opening quarter of an hour at Old Trafford this evening saw Arsenal’s inexperienced starting XI hold their own, with the young Gunners even looking dangerous on the break on occasion.

And, though hosts United have since taken the lead through Paul Pogba, there was a major moment for fans of the North Londoners to enjoy with just a couple of minute on the clock, involving Granit Xhaka and Alexis Sanchez.

With Sanchez facing off against his former Gunners’ teammates for the first time since departing for Old Trafford in January in slightly acrimonious circumstances, Xhaka clearly decided ahead of kick-off that he would welcome the Chilean to this evening’s proceedings with a strong challenge.

And with just 3 minutes on the clock, that is precisely what the Arsenal captain for the day did, stamping down hard and late on the foot of Sanchez after the latter had moved the ball on.

Reaction

The Gunners’ faithful were unsurprisingly delighted with Xhaka’s actions, with the best of the social media reaction below:

Chile coach, Rueda reveals why Sanchez is struggling at Manchester United

Alexis Sanchez’s national team coach, Reinaldo Rueda, has explained why the Manchester United star has been struggling lately. Rueda said

Alexis Sanchez’s national team coach, Reinaldo Rueda, has explained why the Manchester United star has been struggling lately.

Rueda said Sanchez has struggled to come to terms with the enormity of signing for the Red Devils from Arsenal.

Sanchez, 29, swapped Arsenal for Old Trafford in January but has scored just one goal in 10 games for his new club.

He was dropped for last weekend’s FA Cup win over Brighton.

Rueda said Sanchez was persuaded to join his teammate for international duty ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Sweden having decided not to turn up.

The coach told his press conference, “It’s a difficult transition to go from Arsenal to Manchester United.

“He is sad because he wants to show his level. Fortunately he arrived with a great disposition. He knows that his teammates love him and respect him.

“In February he asked me to stay at his club, to adapt, but his passion for the team made him come here. We hope we can help him.”

EPL: Why Arsenal should be blamed for Sanchez’s woes at Manchester United – Keown

Former Arsenal star Martin Keown has said that Arsenal should be blamed for Alexis Sanchez’s woes at Manchester United.

He said that the way Alexis Sanchez was over pampered at his old club had contributed to his woeful Manchester United form.

The Chile international joined Manchester United in January in a swap deal which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move in the opposite direction.

However, the instant impact United manager, Jose Mourinho had hoped for has failed to materialize, with Sanchez scoring just once in his first 10 matches.

Sanchez had also admitted he expected more from himself at a press conference on Wednesday and revealed he was psychologically and emotionally drained in an emotional Instagram post yesterday.

Keown told Daily Mail, “I have spoken before about how Sanchez was being overindulged at Arsenal.

“At Manchester United he is just another member of the group and that is clearly affecting him.

“I remember watching training once at Arsenal and Sanchez came in on his day off wanting to train. I cannot imagine Jose Mourinho would take too well to that.

“Sanchez has all the tools to succeed at Old Trafford. He just needs to get his head down and simplify his game a little bit.

“He needs to start higher and wider and threaten defenders around the back as Marcus Rashford does, rather than cutting inside.

“Ultimately, Mourinho has to get the best from all his players. He does not have a shortage of quality in this dressing room.

“He just has to put the jigsaw puzzle together to create the perfect picture.”

101 Great Goals prediction: Chile 2-0 Sweden

Chile to beat Sweden 2-0 is 10/1 with Paddy Power

As Chile failed to qualify for this summer’s World Cup, their upcoming friendlies against Sweden and Denmark have added importance.

The Chilean national team are playing for pride during the international break whilst Sweden coach Janne Andersson will be looking to figure out his best XI for the World Cup.

Chile may not have qualified for Russia, but they have a spectacularly talented squad who are capable of beating most national sides.

Sweden vs Chile: Who will win?

The bookies have Chile as slight favourites at 13/10.

Sweden can be backed at 15/8.

First goal scorer tip: Alexis Sanchez at 11/2 with Paddy Power.

Alexis Sanchez

One man who is in desperately in need of a five star performance is Alexis Sanchez.

The 29 year old left Arsenal in January to join Manchester United and has failed to hit the ground running. Alexis was even dropped from the United starting XI for their match against Brighton in the FA Cup last weekend.

Sanchez has scored just one goal since arriving at Old Trafford and a strong performance for his national side would surely take away some of the criticism that he is currently facing.

Sanchez will be up against his club team-mate Victor Lindelof.

Key men

RB Leipzig’s Swedish superstar Emil Forsberg has established himself as one of the best attacking players in Europe over the past season and a half.

Forsberg is a dangerous dribbler and a brilliant threat in the final third of the pitch. The 26 year old registered an astonishing 22 assists in the Bundesliga last term.

Chile have plenty of world renowned talent in their side. Alexis Sanchez, of course, is the man who often grabs the plaudits but Bayern Munich’s Arturo Vidal is just as important.

Vidal is just 2 caps away from a century for his country and he will almost certainly start against The Swedes. This comes after backtracking on his retirement after failing to qualify for the World Cup.

Sweden to win and both teams to score: 6/1 with Ladbrokes

Who is missing?

Sweden are without their all time top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic who has barely featured for Manchester United this season.

Zlatan is likely to complete a move to the MLS in the coming days and it will be interesting to see whether he is selected for the Sweden squad for the World Cup.

Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo withdrew from the Chile squad after the national FA refused to appoint Bravo’s former goalkeeping coach in the national set up.

Alexis Sanchez posts uplifting message amid Man United struggles

Manchester United attacker Alexis Sanchez has this afternoon taken to Instagram to post a positive message, following his recent struggles

Manchester United attacker Alexis Sanchez has this afternoon taken to Instagram to post a positive message, following his recent struggles on the pitch.

Saga

The story surrounding the future of Chilean international Sanchez was one of the talking points of last summer’s transfer window, with all of Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City having expressed an interest in the 29-year-old.

A deadline day move to the Etihad to join up with former boss Pep Guardiola was labelled as ‘imminent’ by a number of outlets at the end of August, but, in the end, the transfer failed to materialise, mainly due to Arsenal’s inability to secure a deal for Monaco winger Thomas Lemar.

Suitors

As a result, Sanchez was left with no choice but to stay put in North London, though it had still long been widely predicted that the South American would depart the Emirates, either in January for a nominal fee or for free in the summer upon the expiration of his contract.

Manchester City maintained their status as the leading contenders for his signature up until the middle of January, when Manchester United were also confirmed to have tabled an offer for Arsenal’s star man.

The emergence of the Red Devils surprisingly led City to abandon their pursuit altogether, with the Citizens having not been willing to match the financial package on the table from their fierce rivals.

Done deal

This allowed United a clear run at Sanchez, with Ed Woodward and co. having secured a deal which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan head to the Emirates in exchange for the Chilean on the 22nd of January:

Struggles

However, Sanchez, who was viewed by most as a superb signing for United, has since failed to live up to his billing at Old Trafford.

The Chilean attacker has been slated for his ineffective showings for the Red Devils, with Sanchez having actually managed to set records for giving the ball away more times than any other player in the history of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, all since moving to Manchester.

‘Smile and continue’

And Sanchez, who is currently on international duty with Chile, has today taken to social media to weigh in on his mindset following his recent struggles, posting the following photo on Instagram with the caption:

‘I know you’re tired.
I know you are psychologically and emotionally exhausted.
BUT YOU HAVE TO SMILE AND CONTINUE.’

Jailed Catalan Sanchez Drops Leadership Bid

In this file photo taken on October 16, 2017 Catalan National Assembly (ANC) president Jordi Sanchez, who is under investigation

In this file photo taken on October 16, 2017 Catalan National Assembly (ANC) president Jordi Sanchez, who is under investigation for sedition, waves as he arrives at the High Court in Madrid on October 16, 2017.

Jordi Sanchez, a separatist civic leader in jail over his alleged role in Catalonia’s secession drive, has dropped his bid to lead the region, the Catalan parliamentary speaker said Wednesday.

“Faced with the repeated violation of his fundamental rights… the lawmaker Jordi Sanchez sent me a letter announcing he was renouncing his candidacy,” Roger Torrent said in a televised statement.

This could ease a months-long political blockage in Catalonia, as it means separatist parties will designate a new candidate for the presidency of the region which has been under direct rule from Madrid since October 27 when lawmakers declared independence.

While separatist parties won subsequent regional elections in December, retaining their absolute majority in parliament, they have still not been able to form a government as their two candidates for the presidency proved problematic.

Catalonia’s former president Carles Puigdemont, who was sacked by Madrid after the independence declaration and left for Belgium where he lives in self-exile, was their first candidate to lead the region again. But he eventually dropped his bid.

Puigdemont instead proposed Sanchez, the former head of the influential pro-independence ANC civil society group.

But this too proved problematic as Supreme Court judges refused to release him for a crucial parliamentary session that would officially appoint him president.

In his statement, Torrent said he would start a new round of talks with parties in Catalonia to find a new candidate.

One name that has been raised is Jordi Turull, the former Catalan government spokesman who is also under investigation over the secession drive but is free.
