Meet Bishop Michael Curry, The African-American Preacher From Chicago Who Delivered That Powerful #RoyalWedding Sermon

Bishop Michael Curry

‘There is power in love’! That is the core message from the sermon delivered by African-American Anglican bishop Michael Curry from Illinois, Chicago and president of the US Episcopal Church.

Running at nearly fifteen minutes, the Bishop’s sermon which emphasized the power of love, wasn’t the traditional kind of sermon you’d hear or the romantic love you might express at a wedding. No, it was none of that. Rather, Curry was drawing on the rhetoric of liberation theology — a 20th century theological tradition inspired by Marxist thought — to characterize love as a necessary, chaotic, and political force.

The newlyweds had personally asked Bishop Curry to give an address in front of their 600 guests at the St. George’s Chapel. Curry was articulate, charismatic, fiery, enthusiastic, passionate about the message that he came to deliver. He spoke in the style of black American preachers, quoting respected speakers like Martin Luther King Jr.

“’We must discover the power of love, the power, the redemptive power of love,’” he said as he quoted Dr King. “‘And when we do that, we will make of this whole world a new world. But love, love is the only way.’”

Who is Michael Curry?

For those who may be wondering who this exceptional preacher is, here are 5 quick things you need to know about him.

  • He was ordained as a priest in 1978, is the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church and has spoken on issues including social justice, immigration policy and marriage equality.
  • Bishop Curry defended the Episcopal Church’s move to allow same-sex couples to marry in a church in 2015, which caused some churches to cut ties.
  • He most recently campaigned for the creation of family day care providers, educational centres and investment in inner-city neighbourhoods in all three of his parish ministries – North Carolina, Ohio, and Maryland.
  • The US Episcopal Church is one of only two Anglican churches worldwide that allow gay marriage in church – the other being the Scottish Episcopal Church.
  • In North Carolina, he helped to refocus the church’s development goals to fund malaria nets to save more than 100,000 lives.

Barely a month after she welcomed her third child, Kate Middleton is back to slaying royal events like the princess she is.

The Duchess of Cambridge showed off her post-baby body as she attended her brother-in-law’s wedding today wearing a gorgeous cream coat dress and nude heels.

Her date for the wedding was her little daughter Princess Charlotte who looked adorable in her cute white frock and flower crown for her flower girl duties.

Meghan’s Mother Is Not Your Conventional Mother-In-Law

The focus may have been on Meghan Markle as the bride but Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland did not come unprepared.

The focus may have been on Meghan Markle as the bride but Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland did not come unprepared.

In the run-up to the royal wedding there has been a lot of family drama stemming from the Markle side of the family but if there’s anything Doria did is give us all something positive to gush over.

While she sat alone and was the only blood relative to Meghan Markle in attendance out of the more than 600 guests that attended, she still looked radiant and even broke a tear or two as her daughter took her vows.

Doria wore a custom dress and day coat designed by creative directors of Oscar de la Renta, Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim.

Doria’s shoes are designed by Edgardo Osorio of Aquazurra and her custom hat was designed exclusively for her by British milliner Stephen Jones. Stephen Jones was also commissioned by Ms. Markle to create custom hats for several of her closest friends.

But it wasn’t her outfit that caught everyone’s attention.

Instead, it was Doria’s choice of deciding to wear a diamond nose stud that has us only mildly shocked and very pleased.

She definitely isn’t your conventional mother-in-law!

7 Memorable Black Magic Moments At The #RoyalWedding

That! = Things Meghan Markle and Prince Harry did at their wedding today!

The whole world literally came to a standstill to witness the union between the black American actress and the British Prince. Whether she is truly the first person of colour in the British royal family is still up for debate, but as far as most of the world knows, it really is the first time we’re witnessing a marriage between a black person and a member of the royal family.

And the celebration came with a healthy splash of melanin magic that we won’t be forgetting in a hurry.

Take a look at 7 of those memorable moments below.

1. Oprah Winfrey’s Arrival

Queen Oprah was on time, and boy did she look gorgeous! The media mogul and richest black woman in the world was picture perfect in a pink Stella McCartney number paired with a hat and sunnies. A black queen!

2. Serena Williams’s Cascading Braids

Does it get any blacker than Serena rocking an almost-floor-length braids hairstyle to the royal wedding? Serena’s hairstyle is undoubtedly one of the highest points of the ceremony filled with a thousand and one high points.

3. The Mother Of The Bride

Locs, nose ring, and that oh-so-good chocolate skin! Ms Doria Ragland was unapologetically black and breathtakingly beautiful as she gave out her daughter in marriage. A proud mother if we ever saw one!

4. Karen Gibson And The Kingdom Choir

A black choir at the royal wedding?! Who would have thought! Karen Gibson and The Kingdom Choir’s rendition of the gospel version of American R&B classic, “Stand By Me” will be talked about for a very long time, but so would the afros, the twist-outs, the melanin and sheer blackness of all of it!

5. The Afro-Haired Cellist

19-year-old Sheku Kanneh-Mason was a depiction of Black Boy Joy at the royal wedding. His awe-inspiring delivery of ‘Ave Maria’ as the newlyweds signed the registry tells us everything we need to know about why Meghan picked up the phone and called him to specially request that he play at their wedding.

6. Bishop Michael Curry And His Blackitty Black Sermon

We were over here in our houses screaming, “Ride on, Pastor” to Bishop Michael Curry’s sermon because, why not?

He quoted Martin Luther King, he talked slavery and justice, he preached love and made the whole of social media believers – for as long as his sermon lasted.

7. Meghan Herself!

I mean, I don’t know about y’all but I can’t get over the fact that there’s finally a black woman in Buckingham Palace. Like what?! A whole black Duchess! This is definitely one for the books! And please don’t be a spoilsport by bringing up that, “she’s only half black” thing. We know, we know!

The #RoyalWedding is over! From the Walk to the Sermon & First Kiss – Here are 6 Memorable Highlights

How long have we been waiting and it’s finally here, the Royal Wedding! Meghan Markle said “I will” to her

How long have we been waiting and it’s finally here, the Royal Wedding!

Meghan Markle said “I will” to her Prince Charming, Prince Harry today at the St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of the Windsor Castle.

In front of 600 guests and millions of viewers from all over the world, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle became Their Royal Highnesses Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Present at the event were several celebrities, including Oprah WinfreySerena Williams, Idris Elba, Amal and George ClooneyVictoria and David Beckham, and the stars from “Suits.”

From Meghan’s walk down the aisle in that lovely dress to she and her prince getting into their carriage – here are the highlights for the Royal Wedding.

Too much controversy followed this simple thing – who would walk Meghan down the aisle.

Her father had reportedly come down with a heart attack, and she had released a statement revealing he would be absent from her wedding to focus on his health.

It had been rumoured that her mother Doria Ragland would walk her down the aisle instead, but her future father-in-law, Prince Charles, was the one who did, helping her gracefully.

The Sermon

A post shared by BellaNaija (@bellanaijaonline) on

A minister from the United States Michael Curry was the one who, surprisingly, gave the sermon at the Royal Wedding.

Michael Curry is the Episcopal Church’s first African-American leader.

The sermon was definitely a memorable one, with the reverend throwing in a talk about slave owners and opening and closing the sermon in the words of the great Martin Luther King.

“We must discover the power of love, the power, the redemptive power of love,” he said.

The Exchanging of Vows

Meghan Markle had followed in the footsteps of Princess Diana and Kate Middleton by omitting the words “to obey” in her vow, sticking instead to “to have and to hold” and “to love and to cherish.”

Karen Gibson and The Kingdom Choir singing “Stand By Me”

Who would have thought we’d see an all-black choir singing at the Royal Wedding? No one!

Well, Karen Gibson and the Kingdom Choir were on hand to sing Ben E. King‘s 1961 classic hit “Stand By Me.

The song is a soulful meditation on love, and it was a beautiful thing to have it performed at the wedding.

The Violinist

Sheku Kanneh-Mason, winner of the BBC Young Musician, was on the violin as the orchestra performed right after the Archbishop of Canterbury delivered the Blessing of the Marriage, after they were proclaimed husband and wife. *tears*

The First Kiss

A post shared by BellaNaija (@bellanaijaonline) on

And what would a wedding be without the couple’s first kiss as husband and wife.

Viewers may have been worried after the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex exited the wedding hall without the Archbishop saying “You may now kiss the bride,” but the couple are not one to disappoint us, are they?

Before making their way down the steps, the couple quickly locked lips, right in front of thousands of fans watching outside the grounds.

A moment!
