Brazil Dealt World Cup Blow As Injured Alves Is Ruled Out

Paris Saint-Germain defender Dani Alves has been ruled out of Brazil’s squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Dani Alves has been ruled out of Brazil’s squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed on Friday that tests conducted by the Brazil national team’s doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, confirmed that the former Barcelona star will not recover in time to represent his country this summer in Russia after suffering an injury while playing for PSG.

“Close examinations confirmed the initial diagnosis of an anterior cruciate ligament injury, requiring surgical treatment,” a statement read on the Brazil Football Federation website on Friday.

“Considering the alternative recovery options within the timeframe, it confirmed the impossibility of calling Daniel Alves up for the period of preparation, friendlies and the World Cup.”

Alves, 35, becomes the second Brazil defender to suffer a serious injury in the build-up to the tournament, after Filipe Luis who suffered a broken leg while playing for Atletico Madrid back in March.

Moses, Hazard, Willian Model Chelsea New Home Kit

Super Eagles forward Victor Moses was one of four key players who modelled Chelsea’s new home kit for the 2018/19

Super Eagles forward Victor Moses was one of four key players who modelled Chelsea’s new home kit for the 2018/19 season.

The new kit was announced on Chelsea’s official website on Friday.

The other three players who also modelled the new kit were Eden Hazard, Cesar Azpilicuerta and Willian.

A statement on Chelsea’s website on the kit launching reads: “The new kit takes inspiration from the famous and much-loved jerseys of the 1980s and 90s. Flashes of colour light up the shirt, with dazzling horizontal red and white lines vibrantly standing out against the famous Chelsea blue. The jersey is complemented by the traditional blue shorts and white socks, brightened by a horizontal red and blue trim at the knee.

“Meanwhile, two subtle inner pride features ensure this kit is fulsome with Chelsea pride and heritage. High up on the back of the neckline of the shirt sits a small lion, an instantly recognisable symbol borrowed from the club crest. Inside the jersey, the words ‘Blue is the Colour’ can be found, the opening line from the Chelsea anthem.

“As well as the men’s team, both the Chelsea Academy and Ladies teams will wear the new kit throughout the 2018/19 season.

“The new kit will be worn for the first time this Sunday 13 May in our final league game of the season against Newcastle and is available at nike.com/chelsea and the Stamford Bridge Megastore now.”

Iceland Coach, Hallgrimsson: Our Goal Is To Progress From Tough World Cup Group D

Iceland coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, is confident his side will advance to the Round of 16 at the 2018 FIFA World

Iceland coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, is confident his side will advance to the Round of 16 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup from the Group D that has pitted them against tough opponents like Argentina, Nigeria and Croatia.

With just a population of 340,000 and a pool of only around 100 professional footballers, Iceland are the smallest country to have qualified for the FIFA World Cup.

They will open their World Cup campaign with a difficult game against Argentina on June 16.

Speaking in an interview with Reuters at the FIFA Museum, Hallgrimsson stated that Iceland look to replicate their 2016 European Championship where they got to the quarter-finals.

“They are going to be a tough three games against teams who all have big experience at the World Cup and we have none. But at Euro 2016, we played our best games against the big teams.

“Our goal is to progress from the group, and because our group is so strong, if we qualify we shouldn’t fear any opponent after that. We won’t come across many better teams than those three.

“Icelanders are very optimistic. We always think we are going to win the game and we think we are going to win the game after that.

“Success is not just about going to the World Cup and how we perform there. It’s a continuous journey in the right direction.”

In-Form Olayinka Promises More Goals, Chases Europa Spot With Zulte-Waregem

By Nurudeen Obalola: Nigerian forward Peter Olayinka is happy with his progress this season as he seeks to help Zulte-Waregem

By Nurudeen Obalola:
Nigerian forward Peter Olayinka is happy with his progress this season as he seeks to help Zulte-Waregem qualify for next season’s UEFA Europa League, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Olayinka, 22, has been the main man at Zulte-Waregem since joining them on loan from Belgian Pro League rivals KAA Gent at the beginning of the season. He has been directly involved in 26 goals (scored 11 and made 15 assists) in all competitions this season in 37 games as the modest side chase a European spot. He has underlined his fine form by scoring in each of his last three matches.

The young Nigerian, with dreams of soon playing for the Super Eagles, was on target on Tuesday as Zulte-Waregem, playing at home, defeated Waasland-Beveren 8-0 to win their group in the Play-Offs II for a Europa League place.

“It was a great win from the team,” Olayinka told CSN. “It was good for us and for me to score. I feel happy to have scored, just like every player after scoring. I’m happy as well for the team. It was a good one for us.
“We tried our best to get the three points and now we’re looking forward to playing again on Friday (away to Oud Heverlee), though we’ve qualified for the final of the Play-offs II. I’m  looking forward to the possibilities. On to the next one.”

Olayinka, who can play in several positions in attack, believes the loan move to Zulte-Waregem has been a beneficial one for him on a personal level.

“For the season so far, it’s been very good for me because I think I developed well this season,” he added.
“I believe I’ve had a very good campaign so far. At least I’ve got 11 goals and 13 assists (in the league) and I believe it’s been good for me. I feel very happy about it and I feel good. I’m looking forward to performing even better next season.
“I feel confident and I believe in myself more after what I’ve achieved this season, though the season isn’t over and there’s more to come from me.”

Olayinka praised his teammates and the crew for their efforts in taking Zulte-Waregem this far.

He told CSN: “The whole team has been fantastic although we had some bad moments in the course of the campaign. But later on as a group we came back stronger in 2018 and we made some unbelievable strides.
“We’ve done well and we’re proud of ourselves, each and every one of us. Everyone feels good, the coach, the players, the whole crew; we’re happy, even though we’re not in Play-offs 1 (the play-offs for the league title and Champions League spot). We’re doing our best in play-offs II and we’re doing everything possible to get the Europa League ticket. It’s been a good season for us.”
Having won their Play-Offs II group with 22 points from eight matches, seven points ahead of second-placed Kortrijk with two matches left, Zulte-Waregem are on course to clinch the Europa League ticket.

Croatia Coach Dalic: We Must Be At Our Best In Tough World Cup Group

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic has challenged his players to rise to the challenge of a tough Russia 2018 World Cup

croatia-dalic

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic has challenged his players to rise to the challenge of a tough Russia 2018 World Cup group and surpass the feat of their predecessors who finished third on the country’s debut at France 1998.

Since their impressive performance at the 1998 World Cup with players like Davor Šuker, Zvonimir Boban, Robert Prosinečki and Slaven Bilić, Croatia were eliminated at the group stages at Korea/Japan 2002, Germany 2006 and Brazil 2014 and failed to qualify for the South Africa 2010 World Cup.

And looking forward to this year’s edition, Dalic said his star-studded side must prove themselves in Russia.

“I have to say what is good and what is not,” Dalic told Dnevnik Nova TV monitored by FIFA.com. “Croatia haven’t done well in a World Cup since France 1998, and going on our quality, we should have.

“We have a brilliant generation of players who, like me, have to know that we can’t live on past glory. Ahead of us is the World Cup, and we have to be at our best there.”

Croatia are drawn in Group D with Nigeria, two-time champions Argentina and debutants Iceland. Examining the group, Dalic stated he is excited Croatia will be facing very tough opponents.

“I’ve always said I wanted tough matches and tough opponents, and we can only progress as a team by playing against top sides and [learning from] our mistakes,” said Dalic. “We don’t need weaker opponents. Perhaps it’s risky of me to feel this way, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

He expressed delight that three of his players Dejan Lovren (Liverpool), Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic (both for Real Madrid) will be in the final of this season’s UEFA Champions League.

“I’m very proud that Croatia has three players in the Champions League final, which proves our quality,” said the 51-year-old. “They won’t be tired and will come to Russia full of confidence and motivation.”

And on his squad for the 2018 World Cup, the former midfielder said: “This week we will define a larger squad, and it will comprise players who have spent the last two-three years in the national team. There will be no big surprises.

“We have great players and a great generation, and we have to believe in this generation at the World Cup. They got us there and we should give them a chance.

“I’m looking forward to seeing a group of youngsters who are the future of Croatian football. But we will introduce them in the [UEFA] Nations League in the autumn to give them the chance to show their quality. It will be best for [Borno] Sosa, [Filip] Benkovic, [Duje] Caleta-Car, [Nikola] Vlasic, [Ante] Rebic to enter a new cycle for the EURO 2020 qualifiers and the Nations League.”
