“A female Boko Haram suicide bomber had infiltrated the mosque, while members were about to commence a prayer session but was detected when struggling to detonate a suicide vest strapped to her body.

“She was quickly restrained by the locals, arrested and handed over to troops at Azare,” the statement read in part.

Nwachukwu added that members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Component of Operation Lafiya Dole at the location safely defused the suicide vest.

The suicide bomber is currently receiving medical attention due to injuries sustained during her arrest.

Yobe State appears to be a target of Boko Haram attacks as over 100 schoolgirls were recently abducted in Government Girls Science and Technical College (GGSTC) Dapchi Yobe State.

Although most of the girls have been returned, the abduction leaves a lingering sad effect as few others including Leah Sharibu are still in Boko Haram custody.

The head coach of Yobe Para-soccer team, Mohammed Bashiru, on Wednesday in Abuja said Yobe State was set to eradicate poverty by empowering Para-soccer players in the state.

Bashiru told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the state governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, had been giving the state Para-soccer team allowance every month.

He said that the state governor has always been supporting the team at local and national competitions.

“The state government has been motivating the team since they joined Para-soccer tournament, it has been encouraging us morally, physically and financially, which is the most important thing.

“The state governor is paying them minimum wage, which will reduce poverty level, he also empowered our atheletes by putting them in some handworks.

“They received salary every month from the state government as a player because most of them are bread winners of their families and some of them have their own businesses.

“The aim of the Government is to take them away from street begging and say no to violence,’’ he said.

Bashiru said Yobe team would work hard to win the National League Championship coming up in Katsina in August.

Yobe team won the just concluded First National Open Para-soccer Championship at the package B of the National Stadium Abuja.

Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Alhaji Mala Musti revealed this moments ago while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting, which held today at the Government House, Damaturu and was chaired by H.E Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam.

The commissioner explained that the purchase of the hotel came about when its owners offered it out for sale.

Housing Commissioner, Alhaji Bukar Dauda, who was part of the EXCO meeting briefing, explained that the government considered three options for the property, deciding finally that, as the best hotel in town, the government would partner with potential investors to manage it and generate revenue for the state.

The EXCO, Mala Musti added, has also approved the rehabilitation of Ngibi Bridge along Bara-Teteba-Gulani road at the cost of N369, 910, 405.71. The rehabilitation of the vital bridge becomes necessary as the rains threaten its stability and with that the movement of people and goods around the area.

Also approved by the EXCO meeting today was the construction of 2.23 kilometres of road and 4.46 km of concrete drainage line at Buhari Estate in Damaturu at the cost of N396, 727, 580.00.

The State Executive Council has also ratified the approval of counterpart contribution for health infrastructure development towards the implementation of the SDGs Conditional Grants Scheme amounting to N250, 000, 000.00.

As part of the continuing effort of the state government to support and partner with security agencies to improve peace and security in the state and boost the fight against Boko Haram insurgents, the EXCO also ratified the approval for the purchase of 14 Toyota Hilux vehicles at the cost of N245, 000, 000.00.

The approval for the construction of 3 numbers of 4-bedroom VIP Guest chalets inside of the Government House at the cost of N126, 714, 147.00.

The total amount approved by the State Executive Council at today’s meeting stood at N1, 966, 513, 143.00.

The Yobe Government says it has established a dedicated account to ensure the completion of the N11billion Damaturu International Cargo Airport before the tenure expiration of the present administration.

Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam made the disclosure on Tuesday while inspecting work on the project in Kalallawa village, 17 kilometres from Damaturu.

‘‘We have opened a dedicated account called the Airport Project Account, money is there waiting for payment at any time,’’ Gaidam said.

The governor expressed satisfaction with the speed and quality of work at the airport.

Gaidam said the contractors should complete the project on time because government has the money to execute the project.

He said the state government had paid N5.6 billion out of the N11.3 billion contractual fee.

According to the governor, the project is cost effective compared to airports constructed at over N63 billion in other states.

Gaidam said work has reached 51.5 per cent completion with impressive speed and quality.

The contract was awarded in September 2017 with 15 months completion period.

Yobe State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam, has approved 100 percent implementation of salary structures of health professionals and workers, jacking up the existing salaries being enjoyed by them to N74, 335, 339.2 per month.

In a statement by the Director-General, Press Affairs to the Governor, Malam Abdullahi Bego, said the governor gave approval for 100% implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for nurses, pharmacists, and other health professionals in the state’s health sector.

“Prior to the approval, the CONHESS implementation rate was 70 percent.

“The governor has also approved 100 percent implementation of the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for medical officers.

“A submission on the salaries of administrative staff of the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital (YSUTH) was also approved by His Excellency the governor” he said.

Bego noted that “The total monetary implication of the approvals – which is the differential on the existing salaries being enjoyed by the three groups of beneficiaries – is N74, 335, 339.2 per month.

“With the Yobe State Government now implementing CONHESS, CONMESS and YSUTH administrative staff salaries at 100 percent, His Excellency Governor Gaidam has brought the remuneration package in the state’s health sector at par with what obtains in federal government health institutions” he added.

Ahead of the Ramadan, Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has approved the sum of N65.5 million as part of free Ramadan feeding of less privilege in the state during the Ramadan period.

According to a statement released by the governor’s spokesman Abdullahi Bego, the feeding exercise and other activities like Tafsir will be carried out by the ministry of Religious Affairs.

The statement explained that the sum of N48.5 million will be used for the purchase of Rams and cooking condiments in 42 centres while N15 million will be used for the payment of muslim preachers during the period.

The statement reads: “His Excellency Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has approved N63.5 million through the Ministry of Religious Affairs for the provision of Ramadan feeding ( Iftar ) to the less privileged in 42 centres across the 17 local government areas of the state and for the conduct of Tafsir during the incoming Holy Month.

“Of the amount approved by the governor, N48.5 million will be used for the purchase of rams and cooking condiments for the 42 feeding centres while N15 million will be used for the payment of allowances to Muslim preachers who will seek to guide the Muslim faithful through the Holy Month.

“His Excellency the governor had also approved 1, 260 bags of rice and 630 jerry cans of cooking oil to be used in the 42 designated feeding centres during Ramadan”.

Over the years, the state government has consistently approved similar monies but the less privilege  have always complained of feeling the impact of the funds during the fasting period.

Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam was among hundreds of Muslim faithful who attended the funeral prayers for late Bashir Alkail, a staff of the Yobe State University, Damaturu who died yesterday and was buried in the morning today in Damaturu.

Late Bashir Alkali is a younger brother of the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Alhaji Muhammad Nur Alkali.

Bashir died at 54 years old and is survived by his wife and three children, his aged mother and many brothers and sisters, amongst others.

In addition to the Chief of Staff, late Bashir’s other brothers include Dr. Muhammad Bashir Alkali of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and Kaumi Alkali of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The funeral prayers for the deceased were led by Goni Shehu.

H.E Gov. Gaidam, who condoled with the family, prayed Almighty Allah (SWT) to admit late Bashir Alkali to al-Jannatul Firdausi.

H.E Gov. Gaidam had also condoled with his Secretary to State Government (SSG), Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali over the death of his older brother, Saidu Nguru.

A retired police inspector, late Saidu Nguru was 80 years old. He is survived by his wife and eight children.

The governor also prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased.

NMA Honours Gov Gaidam As Yobe Makes Amazing Healthcare Progress

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), at its 58th Annual Delegates Meeting and Scientific Conference held in Abuja at the weekend, has honoured H.E Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam for his contributions to healthcare in Nigeria and spearheading the transformation of the healthcare sector in Yobe State.

Outgoing National President of the NMA Prof. Mike Ogrima, who presented the award to the governor, described as ‘marvellous’ and ‘wonderful’ the progress that Yobe has made under Governor Gaidam in healthcare, saying the governor deserves commendation for defying challenges to achieve so much.

The NMA cited the broad spectrum of interventions in the healthcare sector that Gov. Gaidam has made, saying that those interventions have improved service delivery and maximise the quality of care across the state.

The Gaidam administration has built a brand new teaching hospital and a college of medicine at Yobe State University to improve tertiary healthcare and grow Yobe’s own corps of indigenous medical doctors.

Major hospitals in Damaturu, Potiskum, Gashu’a and Gaidam have also been totally retrofitted and equipped to make healthcare more accessible and affordable to the people.

“The infrastructure I have seen in Yobe during my visit…The establishment of a new medical college and all the interventions in the healthcare sector are marvellous”, Prof. Ogrima said as he presented H.E Gov. Gaidam with his award plaque.

The public may recall that NMA Yobe State branch and the Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Nigeria (SOGON) have earlier conferred awards on Gov. Gaidam for his strides in healthcare and for improving the health of women and children in the state.

The NMA has also recognised the governors of Sokoto and Taraba States as well as the wife of the governor of Kebbi State, Hajiya Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, herself a consultant pediatrician and member of the NMA, amongst others for their own roles in promoting healthcare in their individual states and the country.
